Aux and timing belts disaster!!

Today my 182 died on me on route to work, it's a bit of along story, but here's what happened.

It all started about five weeks ago. Whilst nipping out for some petrol I noticed that both the STOP and SERV lights remained on, causing a bit of consern, but managed to get to the ESSO to fill up. Car started up no bother, then this is when it all started going Pete Tong! Driving up the road the dash started flashing like a christmas tree, every single type of warning light going it's dinger. Limped home, shut it down, tried to start it, no joy.

The following day, with a jump start, I got it going and took it to Renault.

Verdict: Alternator, Cost:£450.

But that wasn't it, they advised me the timing belt kit was due to be replaced in March (5years). On it's own it would around £600. £600? But if I got it done at the same time as the alternator I would save around £100 on labour costs. Fair enough, a lot of cash in one fell swoop so soon after chrimbo and all that, but they're gonna have to get done anyway.

Total cost:£940.99.

Let me remind you this was almost 5 weeks to the day.

On route to work this morning about 10 miles up the road doing about 80, here's this mad flapping sound. Then it happened. Dead! WTF! Looked under the bonnet, bits of belt all over the joint! Eh? But the belt kits were just done 5 weeks ago!! Managed to get a tow to Renault, dropped off the keys, told them the crack. They phoned this afternoon with a diagnosis.

The aux belt had shredded and taken the timing belt with it, not good. I was told that until closer inspection, next week that they'd find out if the engine has been damaged. Asked if i was covered through 12 months parts and repairs warranty and it appears I am. Oh I do hope that engine is well and truly knackered. Every cloud and all that!!

Gutted.

Wouldn't call it a silver lining scenario, they'll try and fix the engine, and you may have future problems with it.

Insist on a new engine, i would, useless barstewards, at least they admitted fault

isnt the f4r a 'complete contact' engine ???
i thought so and if it is it'll be toast mate.snapped/bent valves and dinted pistons

  Burgandy 174 sport t
totally raped first time round on price anyway Id be glad they are doing more work for that money

90% you will have a recon engine put in and that one will get sent away for reconning, Renault monkeys arn't going to get involved changing pistons valves etc...

Hadn't considered that. What would you do? Accept the recon, or demand a brand spanking new bad boy?

I've got a feeling you may be right, and if it turns out that the engine is goosed it'll be a case of take it or leave it.

Happened to me 2 years ago, The same thing my aux belt snapped and decided to mislead my cambelt into doing a runner ! In all 2 damaged pistons and all valves bent, Was only doing 40mph and lowish revs so coulda been worse, Got Renault to repair on warranty as car was within warranty period... 6 weeks without the car as Renault had to source the engine from France and no courtesy car either as renault dont offer that, Well still at least i didnt get the £2,887.86 bill lol ! Couldnt tell ya if it was recon or new but it was very clean so who knows

Good luck mate and fight it with Renault this F4R has a crappy setup imo

harsh... whatever you do don't tell them you were doing 80...... they might try and wangle their way out of it..

  Renault clio 1.4 16v
they will not put a new engine in and if they dont repair it you will get a recon engine but there is nothing wrong with that

If it fucked up because of there lousy work then I would make sure you get a courtesy car off them for the duration and if they say no then kick off when the show room is full of people.

  ITB'd 182...
I so need bothg my belt's doing!

Starting to worry me when driving now. 5 years old in july and currently on 64k

But gets driving hard daily!!

Most bizarre....this happened to me too recently. Had the belts changed at end of October, then at beginning of January the Aux belt shredded and took the cambelt with it. Luckily I was only doing about 30 at the time as had just set off to work, but still bent the valves and damaged the top of the engine. Took it back to the garage and they repaired it all free of charge :D

Jesus in that case what a crap setup that is, probably designed to get the money out of us tbh.......
Plus there dont seem to be many 2nd hand engines kicking around, or is there

There is nothing wrong with a reconned engine mate at all. This is one of these occasions when you can thankyourself for taking it to Renault tbh, if youd taken it to a backstreet garage it would have been a lot more difficult to get them to do it under warranty!
