Baby monitors and other baby stuff

Not sure which section this should go in but I know a fair few of the members have new additions to the family, what monitors are you all using if any?

My first child is due early next year and I’ve got lots of family members asking us what we want for the newborn. So far we have the Tommee Tippee Perfect Prep set and the sterilising set, please put some ideas forward of things you couldn’t be without when bringing up a newborn!

Nappy bin
Cordless Dyson (once your standards start to slip, it's great for vaccing up yoghurt, baby food, etc.)
More bottles, clothes, muslin cloths than you can use in a day (f**king annoying washing up bottles because you've run out by 3pm)

BT baby monitors are well recommended from what I've heard?

Set of ear defenders might not be a bad idea?

We have a 10 day old, awesome.

Nappies. We find pampers very good.
Wet wipes. We’ve decided nappy change is an ass at the best of times without putting cold wipes on her ass. We use large cotton pads and warm water which works well.

Lots of new born clothes. They throw up and poo.

Your better half breast feeding?. We are, well aimz is. Its tough, we knew that though. She has expressed to make Life a little easier.

Nylah is feeding every 2 hours or so, you can imagine the pain.

Nappy bin, or just get nappy sacks. They poo but not like every ten mins, so easy enough to deal with.

Tommie tippie steriliser. We have been using slow release bottles as she gulps like it’s goinfg out of fashion.

Will add more when I think on :)

Even when asleep they are bloody hungry lol

One of these, makes life so much easier.

We got good use out of this too when our littleun was in our room in his cot.

Nappy bins are a waste of time and just something else to empty, the disposable sacks are enough.

Don’t get a massive pram either, we did and regretted it as it was a pain in the ass lugging it about.

Yeah we got a nuna pram, lightweight and easy.

Just make sure whatever car seat and isofix base you buy fits the car.
We had to swap the nuna seat and base because it didn’t fit. I know, we should have checked.

Our 2013 family five door Nissan Qashqai has maybe two isofix bases that fit, we bought the maxi cosi pebble iirc.

The anchor point is down by the seat belt stalk. So not ‘conventional’.

We ended up with two monitor sets somehow - an AngelCare and a Tommee Tippee. We personally find the Tommee Tippee monitor to be a bit better, both adequate though.

We initially started with the Tommee Tippee electric steriliser, we found it to be an utter pain compared to a Milton cold water steriliser, which was amazing due to its ease of use.

Perfect Prep is amazing, makes night feeds easier.

If you’re bottle feeding, consider using MAM or Dr Browns bottles. With Colic they’re a lifesaver. Presumably they make a difference when it comes to wind too. MAM bottles are much easier to clean, too.

Stock up on Calpol (Infant obviously, can’t use it until they’re 3months iirc)

As said already, collect enough bibs and Muslins - the right answer is you can’t really every have “enough,” buy as many as you can!

A decent mobile that plays quiet soothing music works well for us, has done since our son moved to his cot (about 2/3 months I think) and still works now!

We’ve used Pampers since day one, too. We didn’t use baby wipes either to begin with, as cotton and water is more suited to sensitive skin. We didn’t use a nappy bin, just bags - particularly smelly ones went in the litter / dog s**t bin just down the street

A decent bouncy chair to sit them in gives your arms a rest

Moses basket

Car seat. We’ve used Maxi Cosi since day one, they’re fine.

Pram - go to Mothercare / John Lewis and try them, see what you like. We got a Bugaboo Chameleon from JL, has been flawless, but it is big.

Get a thermometer for the kiddies room if the monitor doesn’t have one. I used a Gro Egg

Baby bath

For washcloths, my mrs got fancy makeup cloths that are a lot softer than regular flannels, we still use them now. Liz Earle I think?

Baby carrier, again, go to John Lewis, try them on for size. They have a doll there to help

Got a bit carried away there, some of it is probably useless info!!

congratulations @Ben-

As for things to get, you must get a swaddling blanket - they are magical things :)
Also get a Moses basket for the side of the bed.
Oh and a Sophie the giraffe, lol.

And the normal stuff like nappies, wipes, food (loads of it) etc etc.

I have mentioned this so many times to people. Is it really necessary to buy all this stuff, probably not.

It’s bloody mental imo

We had a Sophie, threw it away because they’re notorious for mould. Sure enough, we cut ours open, it was rank.

Makes you wonder how the human race made it this far without having nappy bins or light up thermometers.

Same could be said for cars, etc

When is the baby due Ben?

We had our 20 week scan last week and having a boy again :) he is due 25th April.
Just going through names now but I like Oscar :)

We had our 20 week scan two weeks ago and having a boy too! He is due 19th April, we’ve got a shortlist of about 5 names but plenty of time to decide yet.

i do wonder how older generations managed without video baby monitors, its really is the best baby invention ever!!

i made a mount so we could hang ours off the curtain rail to obtain the best possible view.

Out all the nappies and wipes we tried (nappy cake had a million in it) Aldi ones were head and shoulders above the rest. They actually embarrass the pampers ones. Only Tesco ones were worse than pampers.

We kinda ended up with 6 or 7 different kinds so was a good comparison.

Wipes, Luca hasn't had even a smidgen of red on his bum etc. We used Aldi sensitive ones. We're actually not sure why you would buy wipes that weren't sensitive!

Perfect prep machine is probably the best invention of the 21st century.

We do have a nappy bin. We actually quite like it. Not as gimicky as I thought it would be.

Gro egg is awesome. Clever bit kit but needs a clock on it to be perfect. Little pillow with hole for head.

We bought a white company towel for after his bath. The others feel like sand paper in comparison now!

Loads and loads of other f**king stuff. Oh and he's only 9 weeks old.

Another one for Aldi nappies and wipes.

Tried him on pampers when he was born and they were awful. Tried Huggies wipes and they were probably the worse we've ever used, have had to buy others whilst out, always make sure we have plenty of Aldi ones in now. Never used wipes until he was about 6 weeks old, maybe a bit older. We used cotton wool and water for a while.

Nappy bin is handy tbh, saves going to the outside bin at 3 am.

For nappy rash we use an ointment, I'll find the name tomorrow as it's in his room and he's sleeping. It's not cheap but it's bloody good, clears it overnight.

We never bothered with a motion monitor/mat thing as we were told they were a bit of a gimmick.

We have a bt monitor, it's ok if the handset is plugged in, otherwise the battery lasts an hour or so. Has temp, music, feed clock and a few other bits on it.

For teething we've used powder. He couldn't get in with gel and the Parsons powder seems to be the best, just try to get it somewhere other than boots as it's f**king extortionate there.

We were pretty lucky as Laura fed him throughout and expressed when it was needed so we didn't use the steriliser much.

There was another thread with loads of info in general chat about a year ago iirc.

Huggies wipes do indeed suck, they tear in tiny pieces getting them out of the packaging FFS

We use Tesco sensitive wipes, no issues. Can’t remember how old he was when we stopped using cotton wool, he wasn’t that old.

I’ve never tried Aldi or Lidl nappies TBF, although my sister swore by Aldi ones with her kids

I’d stock up on infacol too, oh and also Dentinox cradle cap shampoo. We found both really useful.

We generally research the s**t out of stuff and only buy the best of any product. Not the most expensive just the best. None of the ones I used compared with the Aldi ones. Not even close. Considering the cost it's mental!

Tesco (and the other supermarkets (probably)) do a fake Calpol & Ibuprofen for 3months plus which is a bigger bottle and cheaper than the branded one.

Surprised to see people not liking Pampers. We never used them at the start but for actual pull up nappies they're head and shoulders above the rest.

Went to Aldi earlier. What a f**king place. I could not understand how it's classed as a supermarket. It just looks like a big corner shop.

Bought about 200 nappies, 1000 wipes and some other s**t and it came to 18 quid lol.
I thought the bird at the checkout said 80 and thought that doesn't seem that cheap haha.

Also apparently you're supposed to pack after you've paid and moved away from the tills?? WTF!
