Back to Clios or not?

Hi folks,

About 5 years ago I had a nice phase 2 172 that I loved for about a week, then the aux belt snapped, took the cam belt with it and I ended up with a new head fitted. It was never the same after that and I sold it at a £2200 loss after just 2 and a half months. When it was running it was brilliant but it's taken until now 5 years and 17 cars later to look back at them.

I have a highly modified mk1 Mx5 that I've had for about 3 years, sometimes as an only car and sometimes as a track car with a daily driver along side it.

I've just signed a new contract with an agency in Leeds(I'm a video director by trade) which means I will be commuting 100 miles a day and the Mx5 is not a good commuter car, it's low, has bucket seats and a roll cage and it makes a racket. I started to look into BMW E46 diesels and the like but they just don't get me excited at all so I started to wonder if another RS would be a good half way house. It's much comfier than the mx5 and has all the mod cons whilst still being an engaging drive.

My biggest issue is I have been bitten once, the car I bought 5 years ago had service history and supposedly the belts had just been done, it turns out the receipt was dodgy hence the aux belt snapping so any car I buy will be taken to a specialist (one off here, perhaps in a trade swap for a commercial being shot?) and the belts done straight away.

So my query is, 5 years on, what other issues do these cars have? I can't afford to miss meetings or shoots because of my car and I'll be dong a ton of miles, what should I be looking out for?

Cheers!

Belts is the major one. 172s have gearbox issues. Also finding one that's had its fluids kept in check is tough. Timing is also a problem, if it's had the timing belt replaced by a cowboy it's entirely possible the engines lost +20bhp and/or screwed the insides.

Doom & gloom over, finding a £2k 182 with all these problems is highly unlikely. And if you do your homework you can spot the signs. as a rule of thumb if it's used and over £2k, take a trusted mechanic
