Basic spec Renaultsport Clio Race Series

Sounds like a great concept and one I'd be very interested in getting involved in if I could find someone to share the costs/driving with but I couldn't see that being an issue due to the lack f cost.

Lol! I have enough ballast to last me a lifetime ;)m

Joking aside though, and maybe I am too trusting and naive, but if someone enters with mods to the engine, then its a pretty poor show in a class like this. The whole point is to get it as close and competitive as possible. If you cheat, you're ultimately only cheating yourself. Personally, I'd be entering it for the fun, close quarters jostling of racing and to develop my skills before considering other race classes in the future. As long as I enjoy it, I'm not fussed if I came last or first. Obviously I'd aim for podiums, as racing is about winning, but I wouldn't cheat to get there. If others do, then they would know they were hollow victories and I'm sure they would be found out eventually.

But you can have 10bhp difference between a good 182 engine and a poor 172 engine with out any cheating at all.

If someone won knowing they cheated im guessing it wouldnt phase them one bit. To cheat to begin with shows no _______ can't think of the word.

I recognise that, and agree with the dyno testing. The fact is though, things can get complicated quickly if you insist on exact balance. It will probably have to be banded, I.e within a range of x to y bhp with no mods etc. It must be done reasonably successfully on the power / weight front as the Mazda mx series seems to run smoothly and is popular from what I can see.

I should be allowed a turbo, as I'm 'chunky'. Lol! :)

I'm not gonna say hell yeah I'm up for this, but it's a great idea.
Toyed with the idea of selling the bike and taking up trackdays in a cheap car. There's a few 172's & 182's on eBay selling for less than a grand. Some with knackered engines, but stick a new motor in and job's a good'un!

From the experienced racers, what does a typical entry cost you?

Fuel to get there, fuel to race, entry, tyres etc.

I've been budgeting for £1000 per meeting.

  XC90, 330d, Trophy’s
Daniel, I apologise for not reading the full thread, just making a quick response based upon your first post, I'll now go back and read through the full thing.

but why exclude Trophy's? :(

Daniel, I was about ten feet away when you were at the Burpspeed hospitality marquee. I was going to come and say hi but before I knew it you'd disappeared.
Back to everybody saying about cheating, this is supposed to be grassroots and so half the point, is just allowing those of us without silly budgets, to take a step up from track days. If you have as much as standard as possible, then it eliminates the possibilities of cheating as much as possible. On an F4R without a load of other mods, how much extra will you get out of a bit of headwork? I'd have thought that the majority of us looking to enter were of similar skill level and therefore local track knowledge would outweigh any power advantage. I'd be pretty confident at Mallory and Donington, as I've done them a few times. I'd be around middle at Oulton as I've done it once and probably at the back at Cadwell and Brands etc. as I've never driven them.

Sam, don't agree on suspension sorry mate. IMHO standard shocks and a choice of spring is fine, as it won't make that much difference between setups. It's more about making the most out of what you've got.

Sounds about right. Be way cheaper if split, then you would need test days I guess for tracks you don't know.

Remove the Sach's maybe?

Scrutineering would be a right laugh. They would need to know Clio's inside and out to see what isn't standard and what is or what shouldn't be there.
That was discussed yesterday Andy, as Tony suggested he or others -James, Ian etc could be consulted if needs be.

I can't see this working too well. There's too many areas that need assessing. Can see why the 750 series is probably the 'cheapest'
as its fairness too

A possible way I agree, But I will retract my comment.
there seems to be far to many variables and other bits to get right before my silly question of Trophy's being allowed to compete or not.
initially I'd have said ill be interested in the series aswell, but i wouldn't de-tune the car for one race series, not that I'm knocking it, but I'm one to keep pushing the car as far as I can take it rather than stop at a mildly tuned state, so for me the Trophy wouldn't be taking part anyhow... But nothing to say in the future that a 172 is purchased to take part in.

if you can get the rules and regulations written then it could be a good series for people to compete in :)

We were having a chat about the same thing at Goodwood this morning as we started off discussing the 750 MC K-Tec series saying it was too limited to parts supplied from one place and other products are available or already installed. Those of us with earlier 172s would have to buy new cars for that series. We came up with a similar spec of racing to include all Clios from Mark 1s to the later 197s and 200s. May be interested in this if it develops.

The car will be much more entertaining and rewarding on something more suitable and not a lot more expensive or even less than a full suspension refresh. You've got to keep cost down but you dont want to limit entertainment or driver reward.

Naith BD would need some standard rear shocks ;)

If only I had the money or a license to tow :(

really intrested in this, would be a big learning curv for me being as I've only tracked the dci at mallory

Sod it for that price I'd drive the car to the circuit, race it and drive it home again. If it got trashed I'd get it recovered via a friendly company I use at work.

You may as well just enter the higher class if that's the case.

The more I think about it, the minimum weight/max bhp could be the answer.

Covers a lot of areas!

Cool, I'll just turn my fuel pressure up when its checked on the rolling road day and swap to some tyres filled with water for the weighbridge day then swap back after. (actually most circuits have a weighbridge so that bit is easy, but if you think you will ever find out what BHP my car is if I dont want you to then think again, flol)

Mint, that should make up for my lack of driving talent :)

FAO everyone, Chip is prohibited from entering.

LOL

Sadly mate if it goes ahead you will need all the support you cant get, so you will even have to welcome potential cheats like me, well at least until you can actually catch me out.

I think it should be an invite only series. Like the masons. But less corrupt.

I'm up for this potentially, would come down to cost at the end of the day

And how you would stop cheats as people already saying they're going to cheat is off putting

I doubt I'll be entering mate, and if I did I think I would do so fairly (I say think as who knows what you are going to do till you are a season in and convinced someone else is cheating etc)

But I was just trying to give some really basic examples of how people might cheat, and its something that its very hard to regulate against.

If your worried about cheats make a rule up that you can swap cars with anyone at anytime.
