battery charging at 18.9 volts....

Car  160bhp saxo- clio182
had a loose connection on my alternator, which i found after i lost all my electrics....i was not getting any lights before i found my alternator must have fried...
i have just changed my alternator to a spare i had... it is now charging at 18.9 volts....

the battery voltage is around 12.7 when the car is not running, i will double check on this figure tomorrow.

i have read that the regulator can play up in the alternator....- was just wondering if anyone else has anything they could mention etc

all help appreciated.

Deffo a voltage regulator fault - That's WAY too high chap don't run it with that as it'll blow fuses and possibly even electronics.

There are some places that can replace this for you but if it were me, I'd just replace it with a genuine Renault refurbished item for around £150 (don't forget to replace the aux belt kit also).

As Mick says, dont drive it, the electronics are designed to be safe from 10-15V and have a little bit of headroom but you are really pushing your luck there if its gets any worse you will get a world of problems.

cheers mick i have another clio coming in on tuesday so i will swop the alternator over and let you know how i get on.

Cool stuff. Will just be the regulator damaged so will be an easy repair by a specialist if you want to keep the old one as a spare once fixed.
