How much should I look to be paying for a battery for a ph1 172 any recommendations

i would say £70 odd quid i payed around that last year from kwikfit and I got a 3 year guarantee

id be more concerned as to how much warranty you get for your money, paying £40 for a battery is all well and good if it only lasts 1.5 years and has a 1 year warranty (not saying yours are in your area marksman) you're back to square one

Specified an 012 but most people fit the 063. Its slightly lower capacity but if you get a Bosch one they are generally much higher capacity than other comparable batteries.

I went for the 063 battery. Bosch/Varta are excellent with longer warranties than some of the cheapo options . Near where i am Barden Batteries do Varta on their website with free delivery - £60 with 4 year warranty or £77 with more power and 5 years!
