Quick rundown...

2001- X reg Phase 1 172, 80000mls, Blue, full history, MINT condition inside and out, new tyres, completely standard.

It belongs to a business friend of mine who owns a bodyshop. It was his friends daughters car, she was skint and someone creased the back wing in a car park. To help her out he told the insurance company it was a write off so she could get the money and get rid of the car. He fixed it for less than £200 and its now minty fresh. He's been driving it for the last 12 months but now wants rid of it as he has cars everywhere.

He wants me to buy it for £1750.

I hate buying/valuing written off cars so wanted your advice pwease. x

Do it, i bought a ka for my misses from dhales mate cat d, needed just a wing. Went for MOT last week and went thru with no advisorys. Dont get why they do it sometimes. I also had a cat d 106 gti and their was nothing wrong with that either. If your sure its all good why not.

£1350-1500 would be a decent buy if it really is mint and had its 2nd set of belts done and has afresh mot....
if it has none of the above 1k tops as you will have to get your spanners out.......

To sell at my garage I (personally) thought it was £1750.

I offered him £1000 and he wanted to hit me. Just thought I'd ask on here incase I was wrong! lol.

If you're going to keep it, yeah. If it's to sell, no.

I would buy it if it were offered to me... I need to free up some cash for my ticket out of here!

to be honest, registered as a cat d i would say it worth about £1200-£1500 mark even with all belts changed

there are quite a few 2001 with simular or less milage going for £2000 ish.with all belts mot etc etc etc.

plus you will lose more when you come to sell because of the cat d.

also how well do you know the seller, did you ever see the car before it went in.as it may have needed more work than letting on.

if you got it for under £1500 then it might be worth it cause i cant see you ever selling it on for much than that.

  Mint 1*2's for sale-

seeing as you have a forecourt then you could list a straight one like for like at £2650-

IIRC trade is about £1600-1750-

So I suppose in terms of a profit making exercise its a no no- as CAT D value is around £1600/1500- The insurance company will not be concerned at what the car was like prior to the accident, only that its already had a payout-
I bet if you made a claim on it you would get about 1.3kish-

Its probably a nice car to drive & love if it was A personal car, although even then I would be offering 1.5k tops-

Business deal- Steer Clear..

cat d cars in trade value are worth 50% less than a staright car , regardless of the condition of the car it will always have the category against it !! £1000 is what it is worth as said above !!

seen worse for more

you wont get a realistic answer on here about a write off, because of "the fear"

I know. I thought i'd ask though as the 14 172's i've had in my time, 11 of them i've sold to people on here.

I've just text him and said its £1000 or nothing. Meh, bovvered.

If it's a keeper, I'd probably offer no more than £1500 - purely because it's been registered and he'll struggle to sell it for much more.

If it's to sell? I'd probably go with your gut and avoid it. Don't underestimate the great unwashed and their "fear" of the unknown (their loss in this instance, it seems).

I didnt think dealers where allowed to sell cat d's on their forecourt? Prehaps I was misinformed?

Its a s**t law. IMO all cars that are registered D/C/B etc should have to be advertised as that.

I've only ever sold 2 in my time and both were advertised fully explaining so.

Totally agree, it should be there to protect the consumer and his family!

I will never buy a cat reg car unless I'm buying back a car of mine. Regardless of its damage it's worth very little imo.

Cat D/C is my middle name!

I bought my cat C Odyssey Ph1 for £1200, had some fun, blew the engine up and sold it for £800.

What an adventure that was!

you would get 2k for it i would of thought if u got it for 1k or so , it wouldnt bother me if a 172 was cat d as all i am using mine for is the track so it is going to get smashed up eventually !! and as a lot of people track there 172's i would of thought they wouldn't of cared either !!!
