Behind the Head Unit.

  ITB BG 182
Ive put quiet alot of kit in the car recently and have struggled with trying to get the head unit in.
I took the top of the dash off and noticed that directly behind where the head unit slides in to that there is a small oval piece of plastic about 3in long.
Would it be ok to cut this out to allow more room behind the head unit.

For people who have not took their dash off.
If you took the H/U out with the cage and looked into the hole you might see a plastic plate leading from the opening to the front of the car roughly 6-8in long, just above the ending of this plate is a round/oval bit of plastic sticking out.

I didn't take my dash off, I just pulled as much of the wires/harness that I could down the two holes on either side to the rear of where the headunit sits in, then I could get the Headunit fully in.

I thought the plastic thing was causing me head unit not to go in also!

Turns out it was a little screw sticking up! I tried smashing the plastic thing up first though (with a screwdriver and hammer), to no avail.

I also tidied up all the wires.
Like The preouts were on the left side of the headunit so i made sure they came up through the whole on the left, and likewise with the actual harness on the right side.
I also just used some electrical tape to hold the mass of wires together neatly, so all the spare connectors wouldn't get snagged on anything.

Probably easier with the dash off. Its just a bit of trial and error really till you can get the headunit far enough in to click

I think thursday may be a dash off and removal of plastic thing for ease of fitment and room. Dont want the back heatsink on the unit getting too warm.

This ^

It's all about tidy cables and 'packing' them into the void behind the dash.

you can chop the wedge out but there is plenty of room,my clio had; ipod cable, sub, front, rear phono, aux in rear phono, bluetooth and stalks and all in without chopping :)

  None
I did chop out the oval plastic bit to make more room, not sure if it would have worked with it in but it certainly fit nicely after cutting it out.

My method was to use a 1" cutting blade on my dremmel, sliced the whole lot off right back flush with the back wall.......dremmel was such a good invention, i'd be lost without mine :)

I just posted this in another thread, but I'm having the same issue. There is simply not enough room to get the bloody unit in, I really don't know what to do!!

Take the plastic off below the climate control thing, and reach your hand up behind it , and pull the iso block down the hole. That's how I did it. You just need to get as much of the wiring down the holes either side as possible, and it should push in.

DREMEL....

i cut that oval piece off...

then cut the tray under the headunit out leaving only a lip at the back to support the unit..

with the connects2 interphase, and ipod cable it just was not happening!!!

I've actually managed to get mine in now...JUST! However the case doesn't 'click' in and hold like previous cars I've owned have done. Is there any way to correct this?

Does this just unclip? Is it easy to remove?

Yea it just unclips mate. Lift out the ash tray thing, then you can get your hand through the hole and pull up the plastic that the lighter itself is it, and then you can pull the plastic cover under the climate control thing.

It probably just needs to go in a teeny bit more for it to click!

Pop the hazzard-switch panel out and hold the wires back out of the way so you can get the HU pushed into place, keeping the wires for your switches free too.
Refit and job's a good'un :)
