Belt failure! Valves? where from?

  Clio172 / Focus Ti X
Hi guys, been a while

Since it's been a long time since i have posted i'll explain what happened as to why i need valves!

Few weeks ago i was having some issues with my 172 revs jumping up and down between idle and 1800rpm and making some strange belt/pulley squealing noises (not in sync with moving engine parts but just generally)

monday last week, was driving along 45mph in a 60 and pulled out to overtake a car just normally, My car lost a bit power for a second but kept going. couple hundred metres the it lost all power and lost compression. sounded like gases were escaping the engine.

Got the car towed home, thought the worst and took the top engine mount/belt cover off and my timing belt was ripped to shreds but not snapped. obviously the timing has slipped. I took all the necessary parts off to remove the head and i have found 3 of my 16 valves have been nicked by the pistons and are bent enough not to close fully.

The culprit! Guide pulley under the inlet cam pulley! the plastic outer has removed itself in bits from the metal bearing!

Now my question. where can i buy some replacement valves? Im gonna do all 16. carrying out the work myself as i have a few other bits i need to do. Got all the tools for belt changing and data how to change it (not from autodata lol)

Since im splashing out on it and im not in a hurry to get the car back out im gonna get a bit headwork done and some matched inlets along with new mounts and the air con removal kit, cams possibly. Am i best uprating the valves and springs to help the flow characteristics with the headwork and cams?

Cheers!

Standard will be fine.

Although why didn't you look into this the first time the noise appeared? Would've saved a lot of hassle and expense. Someone changed the belt and left the tensioner/idlers I wonder.

Presumably it's your inlet valves (exhaust are different iirc) that are fubard? I will have 8 spare in a few weeks if that's all you decide to go for. Funny you should mention the idles stipping itself. I've got a spare engine in my shed and exactly the same thing happened to that one. Overly tight belt maybe?

nagh the plastic body goes brittle over time and cracks which results in it falling away from the bearing unit... pretty common failure on over due idlers as the belts rarely snap. Of course, if it was overly tight it would cause a similar failure but how anyone could get the belt tension wrong is beyond me as the tensioner has a clear "idiot" marker on it.

If you do buy new valves i will buy your old valves and see which ones i can re use as i have a head that has 16 bent valves in and need to repair in cheap as possible.

Thanks for replies guys.

bmh.01, i got told it was the alternator by the guy who did the belts. getting the air con removal kit anyway so wasnt too fussed about the alternator. Had i knew it was a belt pulley, the car would have got parked up there and then for it to be changed. Yes i could have saved alot of expense, so can everyone when they have problems surely? but not when you have been mis led to what the problem is.

Assuming i run standard valves? are these renault only? sorry Clio80 Im going genuine head gasket set with ARP studs. Good spot though. I will be buying valves, car wont run without it.

The valves i can see that are bent. Its one valve on cylinder 1 and two valves on cylinder 3. all exhaust side.

thanks

I use a local engine builder and pay around £5 per unit. Just remember that the inlet and exhaust valves are not the same... enjoy the lapping process and fidling with the collets.

thanks mate

yeah inlets are bigger iirc.

i wont be changing and seating them, local engine shop is doing the work aswell as some porting to the head :)

might see if they can get me some valves then
