Bending Exhaust

Hey all

Lately my cars started to develop a knocking noise when cornering, on bumps and changing gear etc. What looks to be the problem is the lower engine mount is banging on the exhaust. When stationary there is about a 1cm gap between them so i guess even minimal movement on the engine is causing them to bang together. I was wondering if it is safe to try and bend the exhaust a little bit or do is risk cracking the manifold etc?

Any advice appreciated

Thanks

Dazz

You sure you havnt got a dodgy engine mount causing the problem?

yeah pretty sure, had my local garage check them over a couple of weejs back, only the dogbone needed replacing.

personally i would try to find out why the exhaust is suddenly banging on something rather than bending it. If it wasnt doing it b4 then something has obviously moved. If you bend it you might stop it knocking but you havent really fixed whatever the problem was. Unless the problem was a bent exhaust.

I have the same problem. The noise comes while going over bumps or turn hard right. Ive had an engine mount changed and a new exhaust. I would like to know if there is a fix for this? Ive had a look and the exhaust doesnt seem to have much support just past the down pipe and the unit twists. I have a m8 at work with the same problem...

yeah, mine also seems to be worse when the engines cold, either that or my ears just adjust to it and forget about it

I dont think it could be a mount as the noise is definitely from under the car and im 99% sure its the exhaust whacking the engine mount.

I had the car in for a rear bearing a week or two back so im guessing they used one of the hydraulic lifts that lift the whole under side of the car (inc. exhaust) instead of ones that just lift the axle. Im thinking that it could have been bent slightly then as i cant recall it ever being that close before

also, its not a sever noise, its like the noise petrol makes when swashing about in the tank, except a bit shorter and totally irregular
