Best ALPINE head units please

Just looking for recommended ALPINE head units please that work with the steering wheel stalk on the 172! I think they have to have a little picture of a steering wheel on the front on the head unit for this to be compatible? (and Ill need to buy the adaptor lead from my local ICE shop)

I already have the Renault Alpine 6 disc mulitchanger.. so I dont think Ill need a front loader will I? Not used to buying head units so need advice on what I should get.. but a red display would be preffered if poss? (and not green, unless I have no choice)

I doubt you will get the cd changer to work with your Alpine head unit. I asked that question at a number of hifi installers when i had my mk2 172 and was told that although the cd changer is branded with the Alpine logo it is designed to run with the Renault head unit only. You probably could get it to work if you threw enough money at it but it would probably be cheaper to purchase a new changer.

Thanks Nick, just saw ur reply.. thats helpful advice, something that I wasnt sure about either. I also heard that they are not genuine Alpine units as such, which will make it near impossible to get linked to a new Alpine head unit.

I think ur advice on buying a new changer could be right there.

If you want it to work with the stock control, you need to buy the lead for it which is £50 IIRC, but with this Alpine HU you get a decent hand held remote with it.

Ive got the same model, only its black instead of silver. Really good unit, you can put about 10 albums worth of wma music on 1 disc, so you can ditch the boot changer!

Me got that Alpine head unit yesterday the 9812 one

Was told that someone it might even be Alpine are bringing out a cable thing which will make the steering wheel control buttons and the old top display thing work with the head unit !!

Nah, auto changer wont work with it

BTW my mate who fitted the head unit reckoned the wireing at the back of the Alpine looked like something out of the 60s and it even had to be earthed !!

The Alpine 9812 and 9815 are both well nice, Ill get myself one of those!.. I used to go with the silver, but as the dash is dark.. I think I might try and find a black player so it doesnt stand out too much? (but will have to see it in the flesh as the silver is looking good).

Andy, Useful info about Alpine might have a cable to run the top display that would be a bit of a shame to lose that display. I might have to call Alpine and ask them how I can get hold of the cable(if there is one yet?) PLEASE keep us informed (and PM me) if you hear of there being one available please.



I have another question now!!

I have a 480watt Alpine 4chnl amp... but I dont have any new speakers, what ones will fit in the front of the 172? (what size in cms or Inches) and what about the tweeters? I think there inside the dash? Dont think I can be bothered to remove the dash tho.

(nothing thats worthy of winning ICE 2004...as I just want a quality sound.. not to shake it to pieces..lol) .. just something highish in the range and dont distort with this head unit! and sounds quality, Thank u.



Please advise...
