best filter system!

hey guys

Just a topic that came in to mind. Which air filter is the best out there for 172?? This includes, Cold air box, Air cone , Air cone with heat shield, air filter replace factory one (keep it in the box)

Out of all these options which one gives the best power gain?!

If u do a search on the forum, there is probably 100000000s of Air filter related topics...

Element filters which replace ur standard filter in standard air box work best.

Induction kits "cones" etc.. make alot of noise, but thats about it.

Pipercross Viper induction kits which have a carbon fiber heatshield are probably the next to best thing.

Also the hillpower IK also.

out of all the pipercross "might" giuve u the better gains, but u wont really get the best gains unless u change the exhaust aswell.

what about this one with Hill power???

oh yeh piper cross...... does it need custom chip tuning ? coz i heard somethin about runnin lean

The Hill power one is just as good probably better, and its not as expensive!!

Hill power IK is highly recommended by lots of people on the forum

Just not sure if they make one for 172s? Best give them a ring

Im not too sure if the chip needs reprogramming for the pipercross kit, but with most mods, having the car setup to work right with the new mod is always a good idea.

Would have thought the best would be the Viper, BMC CDA or similar which is protected from under bonnet heat by fully encasing the filter by carbon fibre.

Think my CDA is providing more air and ECU probably adjusting fuel to suit as fuel consumption has gone up as has power. 11 bhp increase from just a Magnex and CDA so think they are well worth the money and probably good for futher mods when done.

ak_uk and wallisj on here both have have HP IKs fitted to their 172 Mk2s and got good results on the rolling road. Both needed the ECU modding by HP to compensate for the engine running lean with the IK at high revs. The HP IK kit is based on an ITG foam cone filter with some heat shield around 2/3rd of the filter and a cold air feed on the exposed section.

Personally, I reckon the Viper is a neater solution, although more expensive. roamer got excellent results with a SuperChip...

Also, it is pretty evident that the air filter setup as std on the 172 is very restrictive, so any of the above options should yield performance gains!

you NEED to have your ECU modified if running an induction kit with a 172, otherwise it will run dangerously lean top end !!!
