Best oil.....??

I've always thought that shell or Mobil are the best oils around but I was wondering what other people's views are really??? Opie, millers, castrol, duckhams, comma, valvoline?? I just wanna keep my 182 engine tip top really so price of oil doesn't bother me because of what it does.

Elf stuff is decent for the money, but nothing special. The best oils as someone else has said are the 'esther based' fully synthetics such as Gulf, Pro Race S, 300v etc.

Elf SXR is about £26 for 5 litres or you can opt for the same rebranded version Total 9000 for a little less. I can do two oil changes for the price of one Pro Race S....Don't get me wrong it's a good oil however it's a bit pricey for me!

Is there actually a problem with AC delco oil? I really don't know but don't want to spend a fortune. But it's he right specs, isn't oil oil?

i use elf almost exclusively. valvoline for track cars

I use the elf too, can't justify the extra for the Pro Race S stuff. Not like you'd ever notice a difference.

Or whats the cheapest yet decent to get? and renault for the filter or just a aftermarket ?

renault filter always in my opinion, doesnt make sense not to when they are about £5 to £7

Elf oil and Renault filter, can't go wrong, just done it on mine and the total cost was under £40.

Total Quartz 9000 5w-40. I think oil is "much of a muchness", i think people putting in fully ester based synthetic oil into their engines are probably burning money away. A regular change is more important IMO. Highly debated subject though that holds a lot of opinions.

This. These are the best oils but obviously not if you're leaving in there for 20k miles. changing regularly is important.

I think oil is "much of a muchness".

There is a hell of a lot of R&D and testing the goes into oil. To say that oil is just slippy liquid is way off the mark.
The forces/conditions involved in an engine at 7k rpm are massive.

Personally, I therefore see it as a no-brainer to buy the best oil I can to increase lengevity because I intend to keep the Trophy for MANY years to come.

What makes you think a flashy brand 5w-40 will increase logetivity over a run of the mill 5w-40?

Will you be buying that Nanotech stuff because its the "best" ? £80 for 4-5 litres?

I've seen an oil test back in 2009, it showed the oil film resistance to mecanical force and the motul 300v was almost twice more adhesive to metal than a normal 5w40 oil. mind you the test was to show the benefits of running with or without oil additive.
The guy was testing castrol magnatec without and then with the additive. one bloke from the audience asked for a test with motul 300v which he had in the trunk and it came out about the same as the treated castrol oil and as I said about twice more resistant than the non treated oil.
