Best product for cleaning black exterior plastics

  RB 197
In the past i have got polish/tar remover on black outer trim. I have used a fair few products and some elbow grease to get it off but after awhile the offending areas tend to show back again.

What products are recommend to clean up the plastic outer trim the best as it's driving me mad now having white marks in some places (awaits moans of 'should of been more careful etc)

AG bumper care is really good (imo), makes the plastic look new again!

Although that's more of a final finish, not to clean it I think :)

Linseed Oil and WD40.

JD has done a small guide somewhere :)

EDIT : Just found it

Sprayed some WD40 on it the other day ;) will look at this guide though, thanks for that!

Shadow, i was using Bumper Care on it hun, it lasted a few weeks then you could start to see the previous polish show through.

mine look fantastic after a coat of AG bumper care!!!best thing ive used

When i first use it, it looks fantastic, really clean, nice matte finish but why after a few weeks does this subside leaving the original polish marks i tried to cover baring all?

Ooooh, another thread ;)

Only messing, as above, several house hold products remove this stuff, all to be found in petrol stations/B&Q/Halfords :)

Meguiars Tar & Bug remover spray is shite, really waxy and has left a horrible visible film now, grr. RB is the worst colour ever for visible tar residue, grr!

Tar? Thought you were on about polish on white plastics? I'm confused.

Anyway for tar you want to invest in Autosmart Tardis and a spray bottle with a chem resistant head. Spray it on, agitate, leave to dwell for a couple of minutes (literally) and then rinse off LOTS. It will however strip any protection you've built up on your paint work, so you'll need to start a full detail again once used.

Thanks for that Sy. Basically i mentioned tar, because 1. it annoys me and 2. the Meguiars tar spray i used has also left a residue that's hard to shift off the plastic.

I'm going to look into that now and get it bought as most tar removing products are pants.

Can I offer you some advice hun. Never use a spray wax/tar remover/bug remover. They are designed to stick to paint work so that the chemicals can do their job and be worked in. Therefore, if they get on plastics, rubber, in cracks and crevasses between panels, they are a bugger to get off.

For tar, use AG Intensive Tar Remover. This is basically a chemical based product. Wipe on. Melts the tar. Wipe away. No rubbing required.

The other method is, of course, claying. But this leaves micro marring (marks in the paint) that will need to be buffed out. AG ITR does say to use a polish after using it, but this is purely to get rid of the tiny amount of residue on the paint. Obviously this requries sealing of paint work, if you do decide to polish.

Again, I will point out that you can go miles into over priced products that people on DW swap and change.

I take everything on that website with a pinch of salt and never jump into/onto the latest craze when it comes to product ranges.

Black wow seemed to come and go quite quickly, even on here. It usually the simplest things that work. The link I posted above shows results of getting rid of stains in the plastics from waxes and polishes. You need to remove the problem before covering it. It isn't chemically possible to just apply something that removes and protects again. You need to physically remove the stains with a cloth, hence the above methods. Then protect the surface again.

Thanks for your time Jamie, i do in general like AG products and the finish from them is usually quite good. I have spent money on Meguiars in the past, and it's been a love/hate relationship.

Like you said the sprays leave a waxy residue and looks so gash even when i've tried to go over it again and again. Looks like that's going in the bin.

I have not used the AG intensive so i think this may be my next port of call.

Kind regards

Mel :)

A very good point that...there seems to be a lot of DW fads that everyone gets excited about then later realises are a bit s**t. Can't go wrong with most of the AG range, ITR is excellent stuff

Pah, rubbish.

Agree and I use it but you can't find it in Halfords/local shops, where as ITR is easy for newbies to find <3 ;)
