Best product for removing swirl marks?

  Valver
Just saw something called 'Scratch X' I think? and it looked pretty good? My car is covered in tiny swirl marks which I want to get rid of, whats the best product out there to get rid of them?

Scratch X is a by hand only product and its a lot of effort, but its the best way to remove them if you don't have a Porter Cable machine polisher.

SSR2.5 on a light cut pad on a porter cable will get out all the swirls eventually.

There are plenty of people on here who have one and who help and infact I think Rich even lives near Bristol! lol.

Working by hand with Scratch X will be a long task and even with may not even be 100% succesfull. If you do go down that route use a folded terry towel to give it more bit and a more even pressure. Work in small sections and work the product till there is nothing to remove.

A machine polish is the easyist way to sort them. I would have a look for you but have far to much on as it is at the moment.

Agreed, how many PC threads are there now?!? (loads started by me probably!)

Probably stick the guide that 182 Blue made as that is very helpful, then copy in some stuff about which pads and polishes to use and any general advice.

Or people could use the Search function....;)

Used correctly you will get a nice swirl free glossy finish, used incorrectly and it will do damage, some people say it is impossible, but no it is not!

How do you do damage with it Rich? Is it easy to mess it up or with a bit of common sense should anyone get reasonable results first time. Then results getting beter with practise?

Use the wrong compound and pad and you can install more marks than you can remove! Find a thin spot and you can go through paint/laquer.

But yes with common sense - Use a sensible pad choice and a mild polish to start off, be carefull on panel edges and you should be fine.

Is the paint thinner on the panel edges?

I'm getting a quote from Brazo on friday for having my car pc'd. But without the inspection first, a ballpark figure is £200. I'm fairly technically minded so wouldn't mind doing it myself really. Just all the equipment is so bloody expensive, I don't want to gamble the money. I'd need to know I'm going to be happy with it first really. :(

Maybe a little thinner, the issue is the fact you can put more pressure on a smaller area on a sharp edge compared to the centre of a flat panel.

Used it this morning on those scratches i showed you yesterday, my wrist aches like anything!!! They haven't completely gone but looks better, less noticable anyway.

Should have got Jeeves round he has a good wrist action ;)

Glad it has improved them, will get the rest out before FCS by machine then.
