Best Setup For A Valver?

  Valver
I would just like to be a bit clued up on what people think is the best setup for the 1.8 16v, i bought the car not so long ago and the braking isnt too great although it does have Drilled front discs.

Currently im thinking about buying some Carbone Lorraine pads for the front but dont know what setup to have for the rear? Im really interested in new calipers all round too but what is available?

Perhaps you could show me some of your setup?

Ok so i have found a good front and rear disc set, now how much can i get some willwood/other make calipers for?

K-tec big brake kits have always been highly recommended on here. I'd give them a call and see what they say. The fact the braking isnt very good as it is should be looked into first as I thought the valver brake setup wasnt too bad as standard.

Well currently i have:

Front Drilled Discs
Front Standard Pads
Rear Standard Discs
"Brand New" Rear Pads

Garage has told me that i need a new caliper for the hand brake? im not that clued up on brakes to be honest but there is definately room for improvements.

What the garage has told you doesnt sound right to me... where are you based? would be worth popping along to a decent renault specialist by the sounds of things.

I am in Kent, to be honest i thought it sounded weird, is there even a seperate caliper for the handbrake? they said that because of this the handbrake is only working at 10%, i cant park on hills without it rolling?

I didnt think there was.
Not sure which of the following will be closest to you but they are all held in hgh regards as Renault Specialists and are all down south somewhere - sorry my geography as to whats where anywhere south of of the M42 is shocking.

BB have stopped doing work on cars now afaik.

Mark Fish in Harlow may be your man as he'll be a bit nearer than GDI or Angelworks!

Valver handbrakes are usually crap though lol

I can't think what it took to fix mine - new cable I think!

  Valver
Oh i hope it isnt anything too expensive! how do i get hold of mark fish?

i have found grooved discs all round for £150, bargain me thinks?

I am real interested in these carbonne lorraine pads from ktec, but could anyone tell me if front and rear pads are included? if not will they fit rear too?

My main interest now is calipers, uprated ones, like willwoods? How much can i get a front & rear set for? and will they work with carbonne lorrain pads and my grooved discs?

It is possible that the caliper could be the problem with your handbrake as they have been known to fail on valvers. My handbarke is s**t as well but I haven't got round to fixing it yet. If your not confident in the guys opinion or don't trust him then try taking it to another garage or a specialist and get their opinion, dont tell them what the other mechanic said before you go there though.

I've yet to see any recomendations for them you won't get one form me there rubish value for money unless you want them for looks IMO.

Yep new rear calipers or refusb make the difference.
Drilled disk are not needed there just hastle stock disks are much better.

best thing is to make sure its all Ok to start with and then decide how good you want to the stock setup is very good realy. Maybe your just need a refurb

Calipers are used on the Mk2 cars none RS 99% of the time or cxan rebuild yours

Pads well there laods of choice I like the Ferrdo FDB845 stock ones £17 from halfords or there DS3000's for £100.

Some new lines and a good full brake bleed does wonders.

No need to touch the rear brakes make sure it works as it should. The fronts well Yozzasport sell the stuff as a packagae along with others. There not cheap though.

You cna get rear carbons but stock are better rear brakes do nothing frotns are the important ones.

As for the drilled disk IMo forget them can get better performace for less.

Ah well id like to thank you for typing all that!

As far as i can read are you saying that i can use MK2 calipers?

I have seen some braided brake lines on Ktec for £54 and will definately invest in these as i hear about them all the time!

The rear discs still look like they got alot left on them and well they have just had new pads fitted so if you honestly think i should leave the rear i will :)

As for the fronts, when i got the car it already had the drilled discs on it, they look almost new! So would you say that buying some front brembo max discs and carbons will be best bet?

At the moment the brakes still feel a bit spongy and have to put foot quite far down for real stopping power, any ideas to that?

I had the same feel on mine, got the brakes bled and everything was good.

The setup on my car is red dot FF D&G discs and four pot calipers at the front and black diamond with standard calipers on the back. I rate red dot quite highly, not the best but they are perfect for road use, good stopping power and even under c**t usage have never really faded on me.

I think it was £200 for the red dot discs and calipers, £150 for the black diamonds.

Blimey thats cheap, i think from the advice i will just get some OEM rear discs and keep the standard rear pads on too.

As for the front i am definately going to upgrade to this red dot disc and caliper system, what pads are you using on the front? can i use the carbon ones?

Thats very cheap for calipers so cheap I'd worry.
But I was looking into getting some carbone lorraine pads, but don't think it's worth it for road use to be honest.

No point carbon pads have there weeknesses they mayabe a race pad but they do have massive side effects ie noise/dust is horrible.

Well they were bought a while ago so can't remember exactly, can't be bothered to find the receipt. Since I bought them ive not had one problem and have always been pleased with them.

Look on williamsclio.co.uk, group buy on bigger discs and willwood calipers. Although im not sure if all willwood calipers are dust sealed, might be worth checking.
