Big brakes 1.2 ?

What bigger brakes fit a ph1 1.2 ? I have heard Laguna calipers are a straight swap but I don't know if they are or not ?

Sounds stupid doesn't it ! Well long story short I'm starting to make a 172 rep out of my 1.2! Body kit, engine , interior the lot and just wondered what brakes were kit there until I change struts to 172 with the 172 brakes on

Good pads in the front brakes will give you all the power you need.

Rear brakes require no alteration. Not enough weight to require discs. You don't want too much power at the back unless you like going backwards under braking, hence why in the 172 cup, the bias adjuster's locked off.

I recommend ferodo DS 2500 pads for heavy road use, or Mintex 1144's as a budget alternative. You could get the front calipers from a 172 and put them on, but I wouldn't recommend it, as I honestly don't think you'll be putting enough heat in DS2500's on road use in a 1.2 to need the upgrade. Big brakes will only look cool if you go for billet 4 pot callipers, but most people in RS's don't brake hard enough to need those.

I have drum rear brakes(albeit Sierra estate so quite big) on my 300 bhp kit car but they are only hauling down a 700 kg car. No fade issues as they are only used for a minute or so at a time in hillclimbs and sprints, or driven sanely on the road.

I put Cossie brakes on a 1.4 Orion once. It was hilarious, it stopped so well. I don't know why you wouldn't want better brakes, they can never be too good.

If you want to modify your car, do it. It's not a waste of money if it brings you enjoyment.

Nothing track worthy, the owner's lost interest in racing TBH. Replaced it with a new Mush-tang and a Porsche 964

Let me guess ; 4x4 Calipers with 283mm 2WD discs?

With this setup on my 230BHP RST and S2 RST rear drums it stops well. Very well actually, probably the best braked Escort I have ever driven even on track. A specialist reckoned the setup was good for up to 350BHP ; He also reckoned that people going with discs on the back were asking for trouble and were looking for "dick length" points.

pug 406 coupe, fiat coupe turbo, mk1 frs been so bolt straight onto a non rs mk2, bolt spacing is the same, from memory you need a couple of washers as spacers and there is a Citroen disc that fits! Someone on here done it I believe to a 1.6 16v all the details were in the post! I want to say middo (was he the lad that used the benR inlet manifold?)

I run sport disks on my 1.2, feels so much better, but idk if that's because I never changed my drums

Are you running the bias adjuster with that as well.

IME the handbrake is always w**k on those Bendix calipers. It's not like I've not had experience with those calipers either (Pug 106 GTi, 306 GTi and now my Clio). On my 306 TD and Pug 205 1.6 GTi the handbrake was far far superior, and given the Clio's weakness for breaking the handbrake mounting point (I've seen a few broken and my 1.4 suffered this) I'm not a fan of yanking the lever harder either...

My RS Turbo is still on drums on the back and that brakes better than the Clio. OTOH it is lighter (around 1000kg) and it is running Cosworth brakes up front (comparable to a Clio; both are around 280mm). If I am honest I wouldn't want more braking power on the Escort; it's more than good enough as it is ; yet the willy wavers will say to go to discs on the back despite tails of the rear end locking up etc, double bias valves (no I am not joking!)

We literally pulled the full setup off a 182, dropped the beam, fitted new sensors as the sport ones don't work on a non sport, fitted new pads and bolted it on and then connected and bled everything

I'm honestly really happy with it, I never planned on the conversion, but circumstances meant I needed a new rear beam so I thought it be a good subtle upgrade

Haven't had a problem other than replacing a calliper after breaking the bleed nipple

IMO drums are more than enough for any non sport, and yeah as you say, many more powerful older cars and new cars are fitted with drums, they can't be crap!

I half wanted the performance, but also drums look embarrassing imo, disks showing through my BBS look much better [emoji12] [emoji3]
