Billet flywheel

I'm planning my gearbox change soon if all goes well and I thought whilst I'm at it I may as well get a billet flywheel. Otherwise I'll have to buy a spare anyway and get it re-faced.

What is available? The one from ktec at £297 is a bit steep.

why biillet?, a lightened one would be fine wouldn't it?
interested in this though, what would a litghter flywheel mean for drivability etc?

Billet is from what the lightweight flywheel is made from. Basically one lump of metal milled down and balanced

Cast would not be suitable for the stresses involved, forged would be mega expensive

I've always found lightened flywheels a pain in the arse on the road as fundementally you are removing the mass that keep the engines momentum up. Yes it does feel more responsive but on day to day basis they are a pain for stalling.

The standard one is fairly light already at 5kg. The billet one only saves 2kg.

You don't gain much in terms of acceleration but it helps a little with engine braking.

I wouldn't put one in a road car tbh, makes it terribly jerky at low speed.

Tbh mate its not even that bitey compared to most paddle clutches. Pretty well mannered, could live with it in a road car.

Having driven a few cars with lightweight flywheels with standard clutches and paddle clutches and standard flywheels with standard and paddle clutches I'd say it was the clutch rather than the flywheel that makes it jerky

Well the only thing i have changed on my car is the flywheel, it already had a paddle clutch fitted and thats when it started becoming jerky. Doesnt make any difference to me as its on my rally car, but not sure id want to live with it every day.

I had mine lightened years ago and couldn't tell the difference although it was in conjunction with cams etc. I wouldn't bother tbh

I've got the billet one. Makes the idle rough but made it noticeably revvier. Not a problem with stalling and the bite is exactly the same as you would expect as it's a standard clutch.

Lightening the standard flywheel doesn't give results like a billet one does. weight of a lightened one will be circa 1kg less than standard. K-tec one is however much less.

I can take some photos if you want as I've got one in the garage I'm waiting to fit to a friends car.
