Black smoke......

  ExigeV6|Q5|DS3|Fiat

As some of you may have noticed at Brands i had some black smoke coming out the rear while i was on the circuit. Just yesterday i was on the M1 doing about 90/100mph on average and now and then a little black smoke would come out the rear. The car drives fine although pops on de-acceleration occasionally which i think is normal due to a de-cat.

This has (as far as i know) only happened since i put the de-cat pipe in, could this be the cause or could there be some oil burning off somewhere?

cheers for any help

Im by no means an expert, but I reckon that you might have worn valve guides and that the black smoke is burnt oil.

Am I right in thinking youve done 100k plus? Has the engine ever been fully rebuilt?

i was under the impression that blue smoke was oil burning and black smoke was carbon buildup, dunno for sure thou

Well as far as im aware its black but obviously cant be sure cos im always driving at the time. Yeah have done 100k ben.

Its only happened since i put the de-cat on so could be down to this?

my blocks done 126k and it never emits anythign other than steam. even when cained, thereis no smoke of any kind emitted from the exhaust. jsut keep it oiled up and check the injection system components, like coolant temp sensor, map sensor, air temp sensor, lambda sensor, dodgy injectors. thatl cause black smoke out the echaust. new plugs mite help as well

Yeah mine does that. Also have a straight through decat pipe. Although its an rt done 60k with a hillpower rebuilt head dont think its anything to worry about. Just carbon. Like everyone says blue smoke is the one to watch and of course white smoke .... lol.

get the exhast gasses tested at an MOT centre...itll tell you how many HCs your pumping out.....whichll be the black smoke....blue haze is light oil burning, white or grey,.......and its loads of oil!
