Bluetooth GPS Receivers, which one

  172, Tiguan

I have narrowed the choice down to 2, as they both seem good value to me, though ill admit I havent a clue which one is better than the other. Im prepared to pay a bit more if it means ill get a noticably better receiver.

Help guys, which one would you go for?

Edit, the first one seems really good value, but the second comes with a free external antenna

iv got the RIKALINE 6030 receiver. Works spot on. picked satalites up this morning within 30 seconds from cold, and i had it on my passenger seat with about 6 locks on with a strong signal! they are £130 on the internet but i got mine brand new from a dealer on ebay for £70

just to note, tomtom mobile says it will only work with a tomtom gps receiver, but u can install a patch that allow it to work with others too!!

if your going to spend a ton you might as well get an original TomTom one IMO.

maybe, but this one i got got better reviews on gps world and was £30 cheaper so went for this one instead. came with car charger and house charger

ull find the tomtom one doesnt come with a charger either so another £20 for one of them :-(

Didnt realise it doesnt come with a charger. Looks like I might get the Rilkaline one in that case. Anyone know if they work well in a 172? cause of the UV film on the windscreen.

I know option 2 above would work well as it comes with an additional external antenna.

Personally for me its the tomtom one, imo it looks the best perched on the top of the dash, and havent had any probs wiht it picking satalites up, unless you turn it off and drive 100 milkeas and expect it to lock on in 10 secs, usually locked on anywhere in the country...aopart from multistory carparks in 30 secs

Go read the horror stories on pocketgps world (www.pocketgps.co.uk) with regards to the tomtom bluetooth module. They apparently have a very regular habit of terminating.

The second link you posted *looks* (but might not be!) like it might be a socket/emtac based unit (You may be able to find out from the pocketgps world site) which have a pretty good reputation.

Not all bluetooth gps modules are created equal!

I have a socket unit and in the 172 I can place it in the little boxey thing above the radio/clock display and I pick up 8 satellites.

edit: looks like theyve fixed the problem that they originally had with the GPS units by not supplying the cradle, apparently this was causing the units to die.

Do you mean the magnetic thing you get to keep it on the dash??

Dont know! I remember when I nearly bought the tomtom bt receiver I stumbled across pocketgps and found a large number of posts about failed receivers, looking at the forum now it appears as if its no longer an issue, and that some of the posts point to the cradle causing the failures, although I have no idea what it actually is.

I think you might be talking about the wired receiver rather than the bluetooth one.

Nope, definately the bluetooth one, I spent quite a lot of time deciding which bluetooth module to get, and the problems at the time with this module put me off. One of the original threads is still near the top on the tomtom section of pocketgps forum, it details the problems and then ends with talk of the cradle being at fault which they then stopped shipping.

yep same bloke, got it out to me quickly too! i paid £70 in an exact same auction.

david, yep u can mate, al u need is tomtom installing, and a BT GPS receiver!

So long as they did a tomtomnavigator app to run on the 7610 then yes - and i think that 6600 apps DO run on that phone as they use the same OS! :)

I am using the Tomtom Bluetooth Receiver, cost about £100 all in. Its good but not as good as the wired one I have, but its more usefull overall.

Slight concerns over how long it holds charge (though that is improving everytime i charge it) and its ability to hold on to a signal sometimes. One minute itll have 10 satalites, the next 2!! Bit odd.

Im keeping an eye on it.
