BMC carbon airbox experiment on 16V

OK after a long, long wait, the BMC CDA (carbon dynamic airbox) has finally arrived from Italy. Matt C already has his plumbed in; his was designed for the 16v, except BMC omitted the crucial element - a means to connect it to the throttle body! He knew about this already and got a throttle body adapter made up to take a silicone hose direct from the outlet of the box.

My aim was to hook up a CDA to the original airbox feed coming from down by the nearside wheelarch, then up to the throttle body with a simple 90 degree bend of Samco hose. Using this hose would also mean I could plumb in a connection for the breather pipe that used to go in the back of the original airbox. I measured the space with the original airbox out and the dimensions I got suggested I could go wider than the recommended CDA for the 16v, but it had to be much shorter or there would be no chance of it fitting vertically in the gap between the gearbox and radiator. One of the custom CDAs that BMC build is for the BMW 3.0 Z3 and that seemed to be the right size, short and fat with big 80mm inlet and 85mm outlet - 85mm the same diameter as for the throttle body connection, 80mm the same size as the original airbox feed. So far so good.

Anyway, it arrived, I whipped off the original airbox and tried out the CDA in the space that was left. Oops. It was still too long and wide for the space that it was meant to fit into. To cut a very long story short, after two days of experimenting, building mounting plates and hose joining sections and skinning my knuckles, I basically found it wasnt going to work. The bend that you need between the top of the CDA and the throttle body is just too twisted and tight to be able to do it in 85mm hose! Remember 85mm is big enough to put your whole arm down. Theres no way I can make that in silicone hose either, it would need either a totally custom pipe (£150 at least), or be made out of 3 different bends which would still end up at £70 because of the big bore.

Try making this twisted bad boy out of silicone hose. In fact try making it out of anything with an 85mm bore and youll have a job. This is *still* not tight enough!

So it looks like Ill have to wait for some 89mm brake ducting hose to arrive and lets hope its flexible enough to take the tight bends, but strong enough not to collapse under the vacuum from the manifold. For the 10 minutes that I had it working before the connecting pipe popped off the throttle body, the car did seem noticeably more perky than with the original airbox.

Ill add more details once Ive tried to hook it up again; at the moment my Clios off the road with no air filter...

Your adaptor looks the same as what Steve got done for me. Silicone hose then goes on that in a 90 degree bend, although think more acute angle is better and then attaches to the CDA aimed backwards to the coolant tank. Will yours not fit there? Noy sre with all your NO2 etc !!!

Did you get hold of Steve and was he any help?

Problem with the piping the BMC supply is it splits quite easy and isnt that flexible for tight bends. You might want to try some WYREM - it is definately more flexible than the tin foil coated cardboard !

Looks good though mate. Also I didnt put that CDA sticker on mine - prefer the bare look.
 


Simon, you mention WYREM ducting, well I have a quick look round and found http://www.flexiblehose.co.ukwww.flexiblehose.co.uk, which lists the bend radius as 1.5 times its diameter, but on the same site theyve got PU Vinylflex and PU Superflex, and both of these are available in load of diameters, and the bend radius is the same as the diameter - but it doesnt mention how well it would stand up to vacuum colapse, and idea? as that sort of bend radius is what I need to make the viper piping fit right.

Matty - yeah the adaptor is basically the mounting gear I got by hacking up the original airbox, some sheet aluminium cut to make a collar and a load of chemical metal stuff to bond it. A real proper bodge! John (night.icon) is gonna try and make up a proper metal adapter from scratch with a decent round flange. Ive emailed Steve but no reply yet. Youre right there is no room for mine to go where yours is. On top of whats normally there anyway, I have a couple of fuel lines running across there, a fuel pressure regulator, nitrous system wiring etc. No space!

Simon - yeah the pipings no good really, Ive had a nightmare trying to fit it where I need it, it seems to only fit the exact right diameter its designed for and even 1mm bigger or smaller doesnt work at all! In the end Ive had to order a length of wired silicone flexi hose from Demon Tweeks. Unfortunately it only comes in brown, but it can definitely take a real tight bend even in that 85mm bore. The sticker was on it already! I didnt stick it on!

Roamer - if only Id known there was a place like that I would have checked it out!

Nick have you not got a Powerflow near you? My mate just got intercooler pipes made up at Powerflow and only cost £75. You wont need nearly as much pipe as that. It would look nice with stainless pipe comming straight from the throttle body. I have been going to get that CDA for ages but take the battery out and get powerflow to do the pipes for me.
 


HI Roamer. Thats the place I bought my WYREM from !

Where abouts in the engine bay are you having difficulty with the bends? Have you got any photos to show?

On a hunch I reckon both PU Vinylflex and PU Superflex will work. I remember seeing piping like the PU Superflex in a Clio Cup Race Car and Clio V6 Race car.

I went for the WYREM as it is tuff and works at higher temperatures.

A Fiat tuning specialist sorted out my CDA, fabricating the adaptor much the same like in the pic above and then SFS hose attached to the CDA facing backwards. Hopefully they will sort out others too. Total cost somewhere between £200-250 I think but CDA looks bigger (better?) than the Viper and does make a difference.

OK there you go - a side view of the beast installed after 3 days hard labour. The hose fits at least, so were onto stage 2 of the operation, Johns gonna make up a proper adapter plate for it so I can replace this hose with some proper Samco. Note the 3 Pipercross breather filters - from left to right, idle speed control valve intake, crankcase breather outlet, Ecotek silencer/filter

Now you can see why theres no way I could fit the CDA in the same way as Matt - fuel lines, vacuum hoses, strut brace and wiring everywhere on the right hand side of the picture.

It does seem to work very well - maybe its my imagination but Im now wheelspinning on the change into 2nd and 3rd which I couldnt do before without nitrous...but it definitely is no louder than the standard airbox I dont think. It seems to stretch out the 4500 boost on the 16v, so that it goes all the way through to 6500 now instead of kind of tailing off at 5500. Like I say, its not proven yet, just my driver impression.

An overview of the whole thing and you can see the tight bend thats needed. James - there is a CDA listed for the 16v/Williams but you only get the CDA itself and some feed pipe for the inlet of the CDA; none of the mounting hardware youd need to hook it up to the throttle body. AFAIK BMC do not make the necessary mounting hardware yet, and have no fixed date in the future when they will...

So like Matt and I, its down to you to sort out the bits you need. Ive asked BMC for a catalogue though, so once I get it I will look through and try to put together a parts list for a setup that will work on every 16v/Willy.
 


Simon - its the first bend after the Viper, so youve got the standard 90% connector onto the throttle body, then the vipe, and then the ducting, and the ducting must do a very tight 90% bend off toward the nearside light cluster, now that 90% is a b*tch, and Ive already had to cut and refit the ducting after it split!!! once, but I really dont like the stuff that comes with the Viper, cheap looking cardboard and tin foil thing, so thin and dont seem strong at all, in fact I havent looked for a few days so it may well have split in the meantime!

So, thats my problem, and its made worse by the ducting being 100mm, its very tight in there!, but just to add to it, when it drops down behind the nearside light cluster, it must be able to collapse slightly, and the gap cant take a full 100mm duct - so as long as the superflex or Vinylflex gives a bit, Ill try some of it - when I get a chance.

If youve got any other ideas other than that ducting, please let us know, cheers!

PS taken it for a thrash today and the pipe still hasnt popped off so it looks good for the moment until the adaptor plate is done...
 


Nice one Nick ! Where are you taking the cold air feed from - the front fog light??

Roamer, must be difficult working woth 100 mm ducting. I was able to feed the 80 mm stuff through a hole in a bracket in front of the battery and down to fit under the head light. Used a plastic scoop that sits under headlight and pipe connects to this.
