Bought a 172, questions... (and maybe an apology heh)

  Mustang, S13, AX GT
Well I've just bought an early ph2 172. So far I'm very much impressed with the car, its all good fun haha. OK, so the question is how do I switch on the auto wipers (lol). I've read the manual and it says that I turn the stalk to position B, however I cant haha. There is no position B on the stalk and I cant see anything else on there for auto wipers.

And an apology, everytime some-one said that the 197 fuel economy is shocking compared to the 172 I got rather argumentative about it and said it was only about 3mpg difference. I was wrong, very very wrong. In the 197 I was managing around 29-30mpg max normal driving, so far in the 172 its telling me Im averaging 38mpg!

on mine, all the way up if off alltogether, one notch down is auto (sensativity changed with the twisty bit half way up the stalk), next notch down is slow, then a bit quicker etc.

Auto lights/wipers didn't come in on the cooking ones until Jun 02 but i'm 99.9% sure the 172 had them from the start. Is there a sensor behind the rear view mirror?

I was under the impression the twisty bit with the dots getting larger was how long between the intermittent wipe?

Its a 51 plate. It has the auto lights but from looking around it doesn't appear to have auto wipers. If I go 1 click down it goes to intermittent, I think. There is a sensor behind the rear view mirror though yes.

haha, yeah I know it depends on the rain but if I knock it down a click the wipers come on, dry wet etc.

mines a 51 and has auto wipers on it. to turn them on its one notch down from the top like said. does the sensor in the screen behind the mirror operate the auto lights as well as the wipers?

The way the auto wipers work is as described. You have to turn it on... All that happens is with more rain they speed up. You don't turn them on and that's it, if it doesn't rain they don't work. It's the same as the Pug autowipers.

when you knock it down to the auto setting they DO come on once, doesnt matter if its raining or not, then they wont come on again till it rains.

Have you tried them in the rain?
Post a picture of your stalk, (wiper stalk)

right I'll give that a try next time I go out to the car heh. Along with a photo...

yeah as said even with my older 172s just one click down then as and when the rain got harder the wipers would adjust

Wipers are sorted out now, 1 click down and it wiped once then sat in auto until a faint bit of drizzle came, then they switched on. Not a bad wee toy but I'm sure once the novelty wears I'll probably switch them off lol. Cheers Brett, I'll have to come along to a meet again soon, I've still not seen your ph1 mate.

You should have come last night, I can't make the next NW meet unfortunately. We'll have to organise a KK meet soon.

I couldn't make it last night, I was dying :( I hate being ill. I'm sure I'll see it soon enough

Awww welcome back to Clio ownership!

I think the auto wipers are a bit of a gimmick really, sometimes they just wipe at whatever speed they feel like. I'd rather have normal intermittent I think.

I wouldn't be without the autolights though.

Im not too fussed about the auto lights, they only go on when its dark dark anyway I have 'em on quite a bit sooner than the car puts them on. The auto wipers if they actually work might be quite handy.

Its a bit of both. Im not getting rid of project S13 but its getting put on the shelf for a while so to speak

Nope, I wanted all the modern comforts I could afford haha. Poverty spec FTL after driving around in a 17 year old Nissan.

Does anyone remember a thread about how to remove the auto setting so they just wiper every couple of seconds instead of whenver they 'think' its fine to wipe!
