Brake pad shims

Looking at potential discs and solutions for a cheap AP Racing 4 pot caliper for 1*2 Clios.

One in particular would involve using a disc 2mm thinner than the caliper was intended for.

I can't see an issue with having a 1mm shim behind each pad or am I missing something?

Without a shim you would risk pushing a piston too far with the pads low. But a shim that can't come lose is just like having a thicker pad or backing.

Can't find anything on t'interweb.

ALL callipers I have used or seen have built in room for when friction material fails on both pads and then some so you'll be fine with 2mm.

10mm I would be worried about.

Im currently using CES for parts. Their own brand padtech dont come with a thin backing plate that some of the delphi pads do

So I cant see it being a problem

If it all works out I'll be having a batch of brackets made up for the callipers. Hopefully I'll be able to keep the price right down too.

They'll work with standard 280mm discs for 15" wheels, Scenic 300mm discs for 16" wheels and potentially 288 or 294mm discs for a bigger disc with 15" wheels.

Standard brake pipes can be retained and decent pads vary in price from £25-35 for normal road pads. £65-95 for the usual upgrade pads.

Callipers range from £80-120

So you could be looking at a full fit for around £300 including new discs and pads.

We'll see how things go...

Intrigued to see how you will make a bracket to accommodates 4 different disk sizes.

They'd be different for each disc although there are wasy of doing the 280 and 300mm bracket as one.

So if you wanted to you could drive to a track with 16" wheels and 300mm discs, get there and fit 280mm discs and 15" wheels. Not sure why you would want to do that but you could.

there is a theory that using titanium pad shims behind the pads helps stop the heat transfer from the pads/back plates to the pistons
