Brakes grinding...

  Tungy
When I'm braking, just as the cars about to come to a stop It makes a grating noise and the brake pedal vibrates. Is this the ABS kicking in for some reason? If so why is it doing this? Happeneing at all speeds/force of braking.

Pads are very worn :p. Need to replace them soon. Dad seems to think it's the ABS messing about though. Reccomend me some good brake discs that don't squeal too much. Around or under £35 per set mark please.

FDB 845 from Halfords £217 there the stock ones and very good.
Stick some decinet fluid in the system and bleed it.

Brad you haven't kincked a pipe have you when you say about the ABS kicking in

The grinding sounds like your pads are metal to metal on the disc, check your discs aren't worn if your steering wheel vibrates

ahhh mate.
listen to me!!
your brake pads are worn, and they are grinding into the discs..
im thinking you probably have to change your discs and pads now.
can you see scored marks on your discs??
if so.. you need new break discs as well as new pads...

discs and pads

i repeat discs and pads :)

^^^ i learnt that myself last year...

its cheaper to get performance brakes then it is renault s**t.

i upgraded to black diamond grooved and xdrilled discs and pads...

Stock Renault stuff is amazing better than quite a few "uprated stuff" out there.

Stock disks, bled lines, and stock pads (£17 from Halfords FDB 845) are more than enough for most owners. IF you want to upgrade get some proper pads DS2500's are way more than any owner needs un;less your talking 200hp plus track work car IMO.

It took me ages to find a weekess in stock setup and tht was Bedfrod which if anyone has been there will tell you its a killer for brakes. No other track did that.

Be careful with new discs and pads.

Discs can get warped alot easier than you think.

Always check brake lines/pipes/fluid etc when changing discs&pads.

Check ABS cable too may just be a dirty sensor. Your'd know if the ABS did kick in though.

My old car (Ford Zetec-S) were found to have warped discs after a few months of replacing them.

Maybe a one off, but more common than you think.

Maybe we should agree to disagree yes?

Disks "warp" when people get brakes hot and then stop dead with there foot on the brakes pedal causding some of the pad material to stick to the disk hence the disk is "warped"

Its actually a transfer of heat and the disc getting to hot in a certain place. but close enough fella.

I have a mate who has been a mechanic since he was big enough to pick up a spanner and he's seen a fair few cars new and old with warped discs.

To expel these myths, last year, me and a few lads tired to warped mine, as they were going to be replaced that day.

140 to zero, keeping foot pressed flat after stopping, several times done, no problem.

Then t**t the brakes for 15 mins or so, chuck a bucket of water over them, no problems.

Iam sure Chris-H on Retro would back this thinking, as would most guys on Williams.

To warp standard brakes that are not fucked, takes some serious effort.(my disks were halflife on the micrometer)

Thanks for the advice fellas. In the next few weeks I think I'll buy some new pads all around (standard, mintex, green stuff or ds2500's) are all in the equation and new rear discs (probably standard). Front discs still have loads of wear left on them. And I will also bleed the brakes and check out the ABS.
