Brembo HC Max grooved discs

  220 Trophy
I understand the bell is black but what colour is the braking surface?

If the braking surface is black does this wear off or is the disc black all the way through?

(Are the non-grooved HC discs black?)

I’m thinking about a set for the front, but if they are all black it might look a bit odd with standard coloured rears.

Thanks.

Its just a black coating . It actually states " black zinc plated " . It'll wear off within a week or so like all zinc coatings do .

The idea with the black ones is that any bit of the disc other than where the pad touches will stay zinc coated an therefore wont rust i think.

The Brembo site clearly shows them as all-black: http://www.brembo.com/ENG/AfterMarketBrakes/

But yes, it does mention a "protective coat of paint' which I originally missed.

The ones on the Brembo site look different to K-Tec's as they have two sets of groves rather than K-Tec's one groove. K-Tec does mention they are excusive though.

Point made re having black discs, it’s just that I'm not sure I would want black brake discs on the front and standard silver rears (I’m a bit fussy). But from the sound of it the front braking surface will soon be silver.

These aren't actually being sold as Brembo Max discs , rather as KTR's own exclusive black disc , although i suspect they are Brembo MAX's .

Brembo HC discs are a different disc altogether , so there seems to be a bit of confusion from the OP's title .

You'll have a tiny bit round the edge where the zinc coating wont wear off . From what i understand , the MAX discs are no better than the HC's , they just cost hell of alot more .

Sorry, my post wasn't very clear, I was just pointing out that not 100% of brake discs are silver! I like the idea of no rust I have to say.

Now, the ‘standard’ HC discs look to be a normal silver/grey, but the Max discs (which from what I understand are just standard HC’s but with the grooves) are black. So it is just perhaps the Max discs that are painted black?

Like you say , not all are silver , but most are , or silverish if they have a zinc coating like EBC's. It's a little bit gimmicky if you ask me though putting a coating on the disc as like i said before , most of it wears off except for a tiny bit where the pad doesn't touch the disc .

What he said ^^

Quite a few people have started doing it with standard discs - spray them all with high temp black paint, then go for a drive
The paint wears off the braking surface but the rest is left black so doesn't go all rusty and look s**t

It doesn’t look like there is a Brembo Max disc available for the 200 yet (and presumably therefore also the197). This is also backed up by JMS’ supplier not being able to supply one for the 200.

Now I either have the option of upgrading to a ‘standard’ HC, or just leave the brand-new OEM disc on. The HC discs are ‘only’ £90 so won’t break the bank, but is the difference really worth it over the OEM discs?

The other and more expensive option is to go for the separate bell/rotor option as per K-Tec, but are these worth the extra money as they are £500?

Final question, does it matter which way the grooves radiate out? I’ve normally seen them swoop out away from the centre before then meeting the edge of the disc, whereas Ktec’s bell/rotor design seems to bend the other way.

Probably pictures are best, so here goes:

Thanks.

I don’t desperately need or want grooved discs; it’s just that I might as well have paid the bit extra for the grooved Max's rather than the standard HC's – if they were available. As the car is brand new is it really worth upgrading the OEM discs to HC's?

The black coating is zinc phosphate. It is designed to reduce the corrosion you get on the non swept area of the standard discs. It works to an extent, but doesnt last forever. I would not bother changing "new" OEM discs to HC's, and the MAX discs are only different in the grooves.......which wear off..........and don't do anything to aid stopping.

When you need to replace worn out discs, go for the HC's.

Just my oppinion of course, but we do sell hundreds of sets of discs................ www.auto-nation.co.uk
