Building a Server?

  Evo 5 RS
If you don't know anything about disk arrays leave well clear and let him hire someone who knows what they're doing! That's basic stuff!

Hmmm lol

Can someone point me towards one that is please? I dont know what im looking for. I may just even ditch RAID for now and put a TB external HDD on the network so the systems can access it

Its dont an external thing, it exist inside the server! either 2, 3 or 4 HDD's connected to a RAID controller!!! Most modern mobo's have a built in RAID controller, and all pre-built servers will have RAID already configured!

Ahh right well

Reading the server Specs that I have chosen it says

RAID Connectivity - C1 4HD - No RAID with On-board SATA Controller, Requires 1-4 SATA HDDs

Take it as this one doesnt have it.

Oh boy - just skimmed through this thread, which is quite difficult with all the `sub-aguments` going on about network switches/RAID and the like

I undertand your WANT to learn but you really do need to understand the basic requirements (and fundementals to achieve this) before going any further. Dont get bogged down with all the low-level details before you undertand this. Dont over-complicate it either, at the end of the day its 5 clients that may expand to 10. Also, supporting a businesses infrastructure is also a different kettle of fish than fixing your home PC.

My only concern is that you (without any experience) are taking on ALL aspects of an IT solution (however small) when in the real world people ultimately specialise in certain areas.

I hope you succeed and wish you the best of luck.

PS - from a switch perspective just obtain a branded switch (HP/Linksys) with enough ports for future growth. Dont worry about its config (if its managed) as by default it will serve your purposes just fine.

you should do this for a bit of a joke:

ring up a couple of small IT firms that do this sort of thing, get them in and explain what you're planning to do, say you will need a server than can run x y & z

get them to send you a written quote of the hardware they would propose

then you can just buy it/set it up yourself and they've done all the work on picking parts for you

LOL The could possibly work what network companies are even out there?

Don't do this

It's not the obtaining of the parts you're going to struggle with, it's setting up and running all of it. Even a simple solution isn't really something I'd let a boggo helldesk person near, let alone someone with no industry experience

I still standby what I said earlier. Leave possible solutions until you understand exactly what he wants. If he suddenly decides he needs email, web access to all desktops, remote working etc you are going to need to look at a different design to simply sharing a few files and database. Good Luck.

Thanks Spoonie,

He wouldnt know what half of them things are. Email is dealt through his website which I have setup and runs to Outlook. He wouldnt use remote services as when hes away from work... hes not going to work.

Guess he just needs an internet connection for all the clients, but if i connect the router to the switch then that will share it all itself.
