Buying 2nd hand, advice please....

been looking for a clio for a friend of mine, and found this:

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/131643.htm

She doesnt want to spend over £2K, this looks like a good buy.

However I have just rang the guy who is selling it, and he has said that in the last couple of days the exhaust has started to rattle when in 1st gear.

If it were a car you were interested in, would you ask him to take it to a garage to find out what is wrong prior to going to look at it? it is 30 miles away, and I am no mechanic, so wouldnt know what is wrong.

Suggestions?

if he wont do that then just nok off the price of a new exhaust off the purchase price and it maybe only a braket. if he`s told u on the fone tho it appears he`s an honest man 2 an extent

If its only in 1st gear then its prob just when idling, at a guess it'll be a worn exhaust hanger and the rattle could well be the exhaust tickling the rear beam

When driving (i.e not in 1st gear) the engine sits up and straightens out the exhaust system moving it away from the beam

I'm guessing that is the problem, if so its any easy fix

No harm in going to have a look
