buying a 172 with 100+k on the clock

Hi All,
Looking at selling my Pug 307 and go back to my roots of owning a 172. To swap my cars and not have to pay any extra I will only be able to get a 172 with high mileage.

I have found a few 172's with circa 100k on the clock. Are there any major problems to expect with high mileage 172's? Obviously I will only buy it if it has full service history and good condition.

My current car is a 307 hdi with 109k on the clock. It has been a brilliant car and is bullet proof. Want to make sure that my next car is going to be reliable.

Opinions and advice welcome.

Like you said, if service is religious id have absolutley no qualms about buying a 100k car

Tbh, 100k on a 8-9 year old car is average, there is no real reason why it shouldnt do another 100k

Cheers for the advice. Has given me some reassurance. When I was younger I was told not too touch a petrol car with 100+k on the clock but technology has come on leaps and bounds in the last 10 years

Maybe somthing pre 1990 yeah but like you say times have changed.

Theres a few boys on here with cars well up and above 100k, i wouldnt think twice about it if the price was right!

Make sure its got good service history and keep the servicing up your self it should keep on going 200k easy tbh

Cheers all, good to hear of your 172's going on srtong for 100+k. I wouldn't buy a car unless it has service history.

a low mileage clio rs are cheap to buy without having to go for a high mileage. But ur on the swap/px market. I wudnt worry. A fsh clio wud of had a major serice at 70k, small in between. So shud be ok. Expect to change the belts if not been done. But its a safe buy, most owners on here are very careful and only go to renault specialist

Another benefit of 100k+ Clio's is that they've probably had plenty of thrashing or done a lot of motorway miles (high revs). IMO this is a good thing because the F4R's seem to perform better when they're given a lot of stick.
I've been in 2 hard driven 172's now that have done over 100k (a Ph1 and a Ph2) and both pulled really well. The engines are very reliable and capable if looked after properly and I personally wouldn't have any issues buying one. My old engine had done 80k and felt better than ever until the dephaser pulley went, but that was more my fault for not keeping on top of it - lesson learnt.

srsly? I've never heard a good word bout the reliability of that car. Sounds like you've got a goodun

I had a 306 D-Turbo at one point. That had done over 200k and never missed a beat.
I know it's a different engine and all that but I've always thought Peugeot diesel engines were reliable.

As long as the service history is up together it will be fine imo. my car, non renault, has 160k on the clock, wel serviced all its life and its mint probly better than a 40k car

Bit of a lottery really, you might find a FSH good condition car that's been driven by a c*ck all its life, so all appears well, but mechanically it's f***ed.

Or you could find one like mine, 115k, one owner from new who's ritually but sympathetically abused it on countless airfield and track days, killing a few major components along the way. Aside from that it runs like a dream, and year after year almost exactly retraces the previous year's curve on the dyno.

to be honest id buy acar with any milage on it as for all u know the car could of been clocked in its life.
its happening all the time milage correction services clocking peoples milage for them.
you could buy a slio with 40k on the clock whats to say its done 40k and not over 100k?

as long as it runs ok, got a good amount of service history then id go for it

Mark, I heard the same just after I had brought it and was just waiting for nthe major faults to happen. 2 and half years on still going strong.

Thanks all for the comments. Certainly be happy now buying a 100+k clio. Afterall 80k of that may be motorway miles.

Mine has just passed 86k and still feels very, very good!

Only real problems I've had are all of the engine mounts failing in the first 1k miles of ownership (purchased it @ 83k) and generally needing to replace consumables - Oh, and just need to get a major oil leak sorted (£400 :dead: - new belts required to sort it!) and it'll be back to full form! :)

what bhp do u get from your 172. has it got any mods

That's quite interesting actually ^
What does the car feel like to drive without the PAS? Obviously the steering will be heavier etc, but does it still feel as responsive and is it much more difficult to drive?
I've driven quite a few 205 GTi's without power steering and they felt amazing - much more "go-kart" like.
On the other hand, I had a Rover 214 as a runaround which didn't have power steering either - that was borderline uncontrollable.
 
It will rattle to f**k and will cost a f**king fortune to keep mint.








But its worth it and I'm only halfway to 100k! ffs!
