Buying a car with a private plate which owner wants to retain

Ok I am considering buying a Trophy (one of many) with a pvte plate on.

He said I could pick the car up at the weekend when/if I purchase it and take it away with the private plate on.

Now, he would keep the V5 but write out a manual sale form we both sign... He then sends the V5 form off to DVLA gets the orig plate re-assigned then sends to me the V5 form and orig plates with orig items.

Personally, this maybe "fine" but sounds dodgy as. I am sure he is genuine but putting me off this particular one.

I don't like the idea of knocking around in a car I spent 7k on with a V5 not in my name.

Sure there will be someone who knows the usual thing to do on here but perhaps ringing up the DVLA and explaining what the seller has said to see if it is legit?

Yeah, I know ppl like Dan buy and sell cars so I wanted to know their opinion.

I will ring the DVLA tomorrow but I don't like the sound of it but it is a really nice Trophy.

The way I done it was... Send of the V5, when you get the V5 back in your name, you fill out a form to put the plate on retention in his name..

Easy, if slightly risky

When you apply to remove the plate, the DVLA have the right to check the car is road worthy, and you cant sell the car till its been approved. When you go to the DVLA office to remove the plate they take the Whole of the V5 Doc, iirc. Then the DVLA will send back a little bit of the V5 back with the old reg plate no on it. Thats when the dealership would take the car off my hands and they asked me to post the Full V5 once i had it.

I may be wrong but that how it was for me.

Be carefull.

ive changed cars 6 times in the last 3 years with my private plate, its much less messier if the plate is taken off the car you want and put on retention or transferred to another vehicle, it is such a ballache transferring them and putting them on retention yourself lol, tell him to sort it out then youll take it

EDIT : minute too late :)

I am going to retain the V5 then transfer the plate when it is in my name.

Just the opposite.

I'm in the process of doing this now, transferring a private plate from my nans car onto mine. I have to pay £80 to transfer from vehicle to vehicle (In the meantime, the DVLA took my V5 and MOT as well as my nans V5 and MOT). They will then send the nomination certificate to my nan within 7 days. Once thats received, along with our new logbooks, I can transfer the plate to my motor. Its at that point where ownership of the plate itself can be changed, for a further £25, but that can be done at anytime, regardless of who has the plate on their car.

they actually took your MOT off you? :/

each time I've done it theyve just changed it and printed a new cert off on their comps

The V5 doesn't in any way show that you own the car. As long as you have a receipt etc you'd be fine.

Yeah it was in my local DVLA office, not sure why they took the MOT but on the V317 it does state you require the V5 and current MOT, so will assume they will reprint it with new reg number on it and send it back? I hope so anyway!
