We now have a new syptom to go with it. When the ignition is turned on there is a buzzing / rattling from behind the centre console. It is the kind of noise you would get from a relay if you had a flat battery and there was not enough power to start the car or engage the relay.
My guess is it could be the fuel pump relay, because it always stops after ~10 seconds, the sort of time period you would expect the pump to stop after it has primed the system. Is the fuel pump relay in the car or under the bonnet?
I don't believe it is a dying battery because I have hooked another to it bia jump leads and it still does it with the boost battery connected and it also turns over and starts fine.
