Congratulations your a c0ck.

I didn't say format the HD, just reinstall windows ontop of windows, it won't overwrite her work.

If you don't want sound help, don't ask for it.

Insert the Windows CD, await the installationt to start.

Once started and you get to the setup screen you can see an option of Repair (R)

Select this, it will then start into Dos Mode, type "FixBoot C:"

Should work, this happened to my mates PC all the time

I would boot off the XP CD and go to the recovery console. From there you should be able to restore a copy of ntfs.sys. I would try this first before attempting a repair etc.

If you reinstall windows over the top of the old windows, you will lose any data in my doc's or other folders linked to windows. Just try and use the repair console, if that doesn't work you could make a partition on the drive and install windows on to that.

Actually mate you're wrong. Installing over the top will retain local profiles. Done one today.

It can overwrite files within those folders though, (sometimes your lucky and it doesn't delete anything) but lost loads of files in the past. does it not put the old windows into a backup on the c:\, plus any other file could be overwriten, depending where it writes the data.

Nah from my experience it re-installs the OS and just leaves the data. :)

I must have done it 100 times and it's never overwritten the data either :)

Using the recovery console would probably be the 'correct' way, but it's a lot more effort!

Be careful if you have marked your mydocs folder as private as you will lose any access to the folders. I did this once and had to use a data recovery utility to get back the files!

You can change that, I installed over the top of my windows the other day and all my music was only allowed to be access from another user / private, just change the whole folders security permission on the properties window when your logged into admin
