Caliper painting

  Renaultsport Clio V6
Doing my calipers................using hammrite smooth black spray, but......

Priming will give a better finnish will i need a heat resisting primer or will normal stuff do the job. Once sprayed black i have APracing graphics to add. Then finally giving it a laccer.

So what is the crack on the primer

Sould look like these:-

I never used primer, just wire brushed all of the cack off, got rid of the dust etc & got painting. I did two or three coats per caliper.

Is the pic one of mine ?? It looks it.

^^^^^^^ might be yours, got afew pics collected so not sure who's it's off now.

Take it you removed the caliper?

Wire brush then paint with hammerite, which is straight to rust so no need for anything other than a wire brushing and maybe a quick de-grease.

No chance ! Did them on the car, got a 1/2 inch brush from b&q to do them, plus a smaller brush for the hard to get to parts. I did a cracking job

^^^^^you used the brush on type, was going for the spray can hammerite will it be as good? might it flake?

Did you use laccer, if so which one?

When I done mine I just used a brush to put it on, I wouldn't dare take them off or use a spray, I'd get in too much of a mess!

Got to change the brake fluid anyway so i will take them off and spray them i think. Hope to get a nice finnish, will be easier when they are off the car. Might leave the rear ones on, but will have a look.

Do you have any pictures Deb?

Yeah brush on type in a tin. I laquered over the decals, nothing else. I don't remember what lacquer it was.

You do know that four pots are a mission to work with ? (getting the pads back in etc)

- Iirc she's talking about the ones on her ex rb 182.

ebay. the seller is ubernine.

The ebay shop does not list them, but if you contact him and tell him that you want APracing for a v6 clio they will sort it for you.

Not sure theres enough room on a 172 caliper mate.

So this is 'smooth black' hammerite from a tin craig? Will do mine thursday i think, got the day off.

Whats the difference between that and hammered black? Or is that just in spray form?

I painted mine on the 197. I used hamerite smooth spraypaint, with a metal spray primer. I needed the primer as did try the red on bare metal, but it just wasnt covering :( The spray gave an awesome smooth finish. I also got my Brembo decals from ubernine.

Some info in this post i made.

Platicote (sp) Metal Primer. iirc. Its was the only one i could get my hands on from homebase 5 mins before they shut for easter sunday lol. They are fine though. Paint took a week to properly cure, but nice and hard finish now. Much better than before lol.

Id like to do my cup calipers silver like your old ones mate, but doubt they'd stay silver for long.

I just used hamerite smooth silver on them, and they covered fine lol???? I think do them, then bang some collinites wax on them and they'll be ok with just a jetwash down. Thats what i've done on the 197 and they seem to wash up ok tbh!!!!...... or if thats effort, try a paint brush with some AutoGlym engine cleaner??? (cant remember what its called) sprayed on the caliper. Works well also. Paint brush fits between the spokes, and gets into the calpier nicely :)

now there a thought ;)

Heard you had a nosy over the Cup a few weeks ago??.............Needs a stick up his arse springs to mind lol.

and these will fit 172 calipers too?
Branding up standard (non ap racing) 172 calipers ?? If so, that's sad as !!

Dan, yes mate, just a small tin of black hammerite smmooth from b&q. Non smooth (hammered) is rough, you don't want that.

Im painting my caliper red and was wondering wether i can just use a paint brush to paint them? As i dont trust myself with a can

^^^^^^^^Yes you can, get a hammerite smooth paint tin and brush it on, you can get red. It is easier to brush it on but i think spraying them will give a better finnish

easiest/quickist way I found was to get a wire brush drill bit. Clean off all the break dust. Then Get a sanding disk drill bit. (80grit) Use that, till shiny and silver. Degrease. Then paint 2-3 coats!
