Cam Change advice

Hey Everyone,

I am planning on replacing my cams for cat cams later in the year and I wondered if there is a guide on here for doing so?
I'm aware that there is a guide on here for a cambelt change which I have read but it appears to lack a number of torque settings for various bolts and I also understand that autoDoc may be wrong on some of their torqur figures.

Replacing the cam pulleys with the pure motorsport adjustable ones so no need to worry about the dephaser. I am a fairly competant mechanic and have access to the correct Renault timing tools, also deleted AC/PAS etc so aux pulley is a breeze. Engine is also out of the car so access is idealic. Some items i wanted to cover were:

  • Bolt sizes for the rocker cover? I'd like to change these, maybe even for cap heads. I know these are M8 but are they a specific length and is there a pattery for assembly and torque? or just QFT until it doesnt leak?
  • Torque sizes for the exhaust pulley and other idler pulleys
  • Method for checking cab belt is at the correct tension
Thanks in advance.

Uprated cams will need the cam timing setting to manufacturer's specs using a dti gauge and degree wheel. Then you either time them by using the opening / closing specs or on full lift. The Renault timing tools are not much use to you in this regard.

Additionally the problem with the Clio engine is that is you can't access the valve gear with the cam cover bolted on to use the dti, and as the cam cover holds the cams in place you then need special tools to hold the cams in place without the cam cover on. All in all timing in a pair of performance cams correctly is rather specialist work and nothing at all like just fitting a set of std cams and locking them in place using Renault tools.

Sorry if I am being not much help to you in this but if you don't have "the knowledge" I would suggest that you find a decent race engine builder near you and ask them to do it for you. It is definitely not normal run of the mill mechanical work.

Also if your using a manual tensioner, you will need a seem gauge to check and set cambelt tension via frequency.

My plan was to set up the cams as you normally would in a cambelt change, get the car running and idling and handing it over to engine dynamics to finish the job.

Also using the OEM tensioner.
