Cam Gone?

Was speaking to a lad at a local meet because his engine was very "loud". He said he'd taken it to 3 garages and one said injectors, one said valves and the last one said cam.

Drives fine (i went in it with him) pulls like it should noise goes down when driving but when at lights idle is over 1k, very lumpy and car seems to judder?

Its like a deisal. Sort of ticking noise from the top end.

I said i'd check it out on here for him so he can decide which rip off merchant to take his baby to haha.

i think there are a couple of threads here on that ; dephaser pulley ? i will trie to look them up

(exact same sounding prob as you, might be wrong on the dephaser though)

no mate his wasnt as loud and tinny as that. Am popping up to his later to look for a 172 for me so will try to recoed it on my phone. Quality wont be the best but better than nothing.

He's had it a while and its due a belt change soon i think. Is he ok to drive if it is this as he's been using it for work.

P.s anyone selling a silver or black 172 im still looking :p

The dephaser wont always sound like that, they vary in wear and can be hardly noticable through to that one which was quite bad.

the cam wont 'go' as it wouldn't run

ah fair enough. will search the depasher posts for prices etc for him now.

Everyone concur or could it be something else?

No its completely standard. He's here with me now. Says its due its belt changes now as they've not been done and he's just ticked over 74k. He said backbox is not so much popping but spluttering on idle? Stops when driving but when at standstill you can hear it in the car. Going out to record it now. Well if it stops raining haha

Im worried the dephaser on my cup has gone now :(

Idles rough, about 900 but drops every so often, a bit tappety etc, 172 cup on 32k miles :(

Expensive job?

It's new cambelt job + Price of Dephaser, about £80 i think.

That not too bad. Where can you source a new dephaser from apart from renault?

What the best way to make sure it is the dephaser? It going in on Tuesday to be stripped. What should they be looking for?

Exactly same here, had mine changed then 10 months later it, went, but mine sheared off and destroyed valves etc.

Better than valves/cam or belts going though matey. At 80quid my mates over the moon as he's having the belts done tuesday anyways!

sounds like my beloved cup did.....we thought dephaser pulley turned out to be most of the top end had failed and found swarf in the top of the engine....ran well and was blindingly fast for what it was but just got louder and louder.

I also dont know where £80 has come from, the dephaser alone costs more than that new, than about 4-5 hours labour and a new belt (just a belt, the rest will be ok as it's so new)

I said Cambelt change + the price of a dephaser, which looking through some old threads is £100ish, was 2 years ago when i had my 172 fixed.

Cambelt + Dephaser
£450ish + £100ish

Booo ive got air con :( Where the hell are the plugs on a 172? Took off the HT leads and there's i assume the coil pack where the hell are the plugs located?

If i get my car on a diagnostics will it tell me whats mechanically wrong with it?
