So after my recent aux belt failure slipping the timing on the Clio, I was just curious as to how often this actually occurs on the sport engines. If relevant please choose a poll option and post in the thread with what engine this occurred on and the scenario of how it happened.

So I'll start with mine on a 04 182, which is in the 'other' category as I have no idea when either were changed but the cambelt looked fresh, the aux belt not so. So the scenario, pulled away in first and it just died, after looking under the bonnet the aux belt had frayed on both edges and somehow slipped the timing leading to head damage. I bought the car on 99k miles in Jan 2016 and have done 11 track days and around 3k road miles, but this is pretty irrelevant as I have no idea when the belts were last done but suspect the aux belt was due on purchase but took the risk.

I think they changed the 3 year/36k miles intervals to 5 years, same as the cambelt.

Cambelt went as lower pulley bolt was only done finger tight. To be fair, was a non-specialist who did the original work, but still a retarded move.(197)

The Aux belt interval is 5 years not 3. So the polls wrong.

Had my 197 second belt service due in September on age not mileage. Personal circumstances saw that put on the back burner.

Last week (belts about a month over due) I got a horrid ticking noise that pointed towards the dephaser getting ready to die.

Car booked in ASAP and belts, dephaser, water pump, crank pulley and whatnot all changed. May have been a coincidence, may not. But I’ve heard of people running them for years on the original belt. f**k that.

My 197 used to do this if I parked in a certain spot on my driveway. The only thing I could put it down to was the oil draining out of the dephaser. It would always clear after a couple of seconds.

CS thinks it’s 3 years, but everything I’ve seen from Renault says 5 years/36k.

The oil was low when I checked it. But it was such a bad noise I had it changed just in case

Renault then decided to say 6 years.

197s are 5 year/75k. 200s/meg 250s are 6 year/can’t remember mileage.

Don’t see how. Same engine, same parts, why is there a year between them?

I didn’t. I went to the guy I normally use, didn’t want to risk taking it further afield with how bad the noise was. He’s not a specialist but he has all the tools and knowledge and whatnot. And guaranteed work so if worst comes to worst I have some come back.

Ahh cool. Good for 5 more years now then.

It seems no-one can agree on the 3 or 5 year timeline.
My service book says 5 but I'm sure I read on here that Renault apparently changed this due to early failures. No idea how much is hearsay though.

Renault have never said 3 years lol I did a thread a few years ago, and no one at all could find anything that said 3 years. 2 specialists even said all their info from Renault says 5 years.

It’s just most people do 36k in roughly 3 years.

Alternator bracket snapped at 4yrs since last belts.
lost the belt, obvs.
Cams not affected

I thought my aux belt was squeeling when i first bought my car, but ever since the mrs got her own car and no longer was a passenger im mine, the squealing stopped.

3 years came from Cliosport Folk Law, This category may be defined as law that derives its existence and content from social acceptance.

Hi guys can anyone just confirm for me what the general feeling is with the aux belt replacement...?! Basically I had the full works done inc. Cambelt, aux belt and kit done 3 years ago October... since then I've done 26k miles, since I never hit the mileage limit between intervals to me it's just silly to do aux after 3 years, then cambelt again in 2 years then aux again a year after that... does anyone think it's a good safe plan to do everything in one hit 4 years apart as that makes more sense to me...advice very welcome, cheers!

Well the interval is 36k or 5 years whichever comes sooner for the aux belt according to Renault, so it’s entirely your choice.

You'll be at around 36k this time next year, so i'd get the aux belt done or both if you're feeling flush.

Just to update on this why my aux belt went and took the cambelt with it...bloody alternator bearing gave up and you could actually pull the shaft in and out causing the aux belt to shite itself.

Yeah Carl told me that at EFI the other day.

Luckily he spotted it really.
