Cambelt/dephaser recommendations

  Clio 182
Put it off long enough i’m getting twitchy as its sounding more and more like a diesel!

Any reccomendations for a place to buy the kit? Does the water pump need doing at the same time?

Have been quoted £200 by a mechanic at my brothers work to get it done. - he has done two or three 1*2’s before with the right timing tools ect.

If anyone knows of anyone else near the Worcester area let me know please!

£200 😂

Renault Parts Direct are offering good discounts at the moment on the cambelt & dephaser kits. I just purchased cambelt kit, dephaser pulley, aux belt kit and water pump from them and was £200 less than my local dealer!

Had mine done by a couple of mechanics/enthusiasts for £550 all in. All genuine belts, water pump, dephaser, filter and oil from RPD. Cost was £350 in parts.

I think Steve M read the £200 as labour only, not including parts, not sure though as I’ve not read it properly.

Anyone know a decent garage in the Surrey area for this?
My sister keeps putting it off on the BG (due Nov 17 as had last been done 5 years ago), and if she makes it go bang, I may even shed a tear.
She said a mechanic they know, is going to check "electronically" when it needs doing? Is he winding her up or what?

You also need to replace the crank bolt and you can also buy a cam pulley fitting kit which comprises of dephaser bolt and plug, exhaust cam nut and both oil seals.

These were the correct numbers in 2014, some may have been superseded.

I have replaced the dephaser, timing belt and water pump on a 172 and would just make the following observations: -
I had not done one before, but took well over the 6 hours that the specialists can do the job in. Its really not difficult, but access is really limited.
As for parts, personally, as these components are so important to the performance and life of your engine, would definitely only fit genuine parts (circa £250 with pump) and you must replace water-pump at same time, for following reasons. If you do this job you will realise that getting to the water pump is easy when you doing the belt, but if you had to replace the pump separately it would replicate a lot of the work (belt off etc). Secondly, if the pump fails which is slightly more likely with a new belt (and extra tension) it could cause the new belt to be damaged, jump and even damage your engine. If you look at the routing of the belt, the water-pump provides essential tension to the belt. Lastly, the days on the existing pump will most likely be ticking. If it starts to leak it could cause the engine to overheat.

Finally, if you understand how the dephaser works (via engine oil pressure) it is worth stating that regular servicing and as importantly use of the correct grade oil is vital to the longevity of the new dephaser. It will pay dividends with these fantastic engines if you service regularly with the correct grade oil.

I hope this helps you to make up your mind, but to me, £200 for labour appears good value, if the person knows what they are doing.

I'm sorry to bump this but this sounds interesting. Mines making some lovely noises. It really needs doing Its been recommend I go to twotecs in Dartford.

I've done a cam belt with help of a mech mate on my 1.2 but the 182 seems more daunting. In all honesty how difficult is it? I know I can get kits. So does that mean it comes with everything you need? Bar like oil and water pump? Will I have to change oil again? After ive only just done it 2 months back?

Hi can only say use a quality/genuine kit with dephaser pulley and in my opinion you must replace water pump. It would be false economy not to as it forms part of the tensioning system and if it failed would require all same work to be done again, even if it didn't wreck your engine. £200 sounds very good to me

You need the timing tool which is what stops most people as the genuine ones are quite dear.

Ps: Blegh.

Yea the timing tool is pretty expensive, you can only buy the genuine one because the pattern-part is useless and puts the timing out.

If you're going to sell it on, having proof the belts were done by a known specialist is a big plus point.
