Cambelt gone....

  Clio 172
Hi all,

Only my second post and only the second time my cambelt has given up in the last two and a half years!

Cost me £1600 last time and just had a quote of £1622 from a different garage so assume that's the going rate (inc cylinder head, and VAT)

Car is a full fat 172 on a 52 plate with 42k miles in flame red...needs new front tyres, a service, has a number of small dents and scratches, as well as kerbed front wheels.

Question is....do I scrap it?

If not, would someone buy it off me in it's current state and, if so, how much do you reckon I'd get?

Your thoughts please .....

PS. I'd just had it cleaned and had driven half a mile of a 55 mile journey to look at a 07 BMW 335 conv and an 06 Cayman S, which I was going to part ex it for.....the definition of sod's law!! :(

I wouldn't spend £1600 to fix it. Break it for parts.

So this is the second time you've had a cambelt go? Maybe you need to drive it with a bit of mechanical sympathy?

Last time a sensor went on the power steering hose, pump seized, aux belt came off and took the cambelt with it....some joker charged me £1600 to fix it but put an oil seal in the wrong way round! Broke again on my way down to Newquay for a holiday and cost another £800 to put right - middle of nowhere so no option to use a specialist.

Thanks Revels, but I didn't expect a two and a half year old cambelt to go after less than 15k miles without any warning!

Also, not realistic to scrap it for parts as I live in a flat with no off street parking. Just wondered if it is likely someone would want to by it and fix it themselves.

Pay to join up and advertise it for sale. Probably worth about £500.

But I'd be having serious words with the garage.

its worth £500 as it is (yes that is the going rate for a 172 with knackered cambelt)

Revels - dude i'm not deleting 500pm's just so i can pm you! LOL

Middle of nowhere ? FLOL !

You're <2hrs from about 20 specialists. Ren-tec (or something like that) in Chelmsford. Mark Fish Harlow. 519 Automotive in Bedford are not that far away. Two Techs in Dartford.....

Failing that, bring it to me .. back garden, strip it. I'll give you a months rental space for £100 to break it. Anything left after that is mine ;)

I'm not in the middle of nowhere, I was talking about when it last broke down on my way to Newquay. RAC towed it to local garage in a little village in Devon. There's plenty round here and I've used them but I'm more interested in whether it's worth fixing.

Had a couple of offers for it as is so prob just cut my losses and go buy a Cayman S

Well if you have some handy mates, about £500 for a second hand engine fitted will get the car up and running again, then trade it in.

  Clio 172
Haven't got any mates that could do it..how much do you reckon a garage would charge?

Was only likely to get £1500 part ex so think I be best to just get rid

  Track 172cup
worth about a £2000-2500 with that mileage if it ran well ?

take off cost of repair and hassle and i'd say £500-700 max as it is

  Clio 172
It did run well and bar the points I mentioned there was nothing else wrong with it...best colour, low mileage etc

Been great fun for five years but prob could've run a 911 for less! Bloody French surrender monkey of a car this one

Buy a new engine? Why scrap it when F4R engines are coming up all the time for less than £600?

Sorry but @ £1600 the first time round id have sooner forgot where i left it with the door open and the keys in it and took the hit for insurance

  Clio 172
I think so and I don't wanna take the risk that they find something else when fixing it.

Even if I stick a new engine in for say £800, I'm gonna take it straight to a dealer an part ex it for probably £1500...might as well take £500-600 for it and save the hassle.

Just spoke the garage again and apparently the dealer next is also interested so doesn't look like I'm going to have any trouble selling it as is

Best to just get rid any way you can I guess. If people are willing to buy it off you and remove it for you too, take them up on it !

Id give you £400 for it as I am not far from you... Would give £500 but it will cost me £100 to get in transported back to mine!

^ Why is that his problem ?

No different to me saying I want it for a toy when I visit my family in Dubai, but it'll cost £600 to transport .. Can I have the car and £100 please ?

So, seeing as I am close to you and have a transporter, I'll give you £500 +the cost of getting it here of £150 = £650 in your pocket!! ;)

Any advance on £650? Got two offers for that collected...there's any easy £1000-1500 to be made

If not, I'll sort it tomorrow and hopefully be joining the Cayman or BMW forum on Sat ;)

If I don't reply I hope you all enjoy your clios (which has been loadsa fun) and you have a lot more luck with yours!!

Is there any way of preventing this awesome bonus of a sensor going on your PAS?? How can you tell and prevent the same happening?

Danith - I doubt there is a way, the steering went and I should've just pulled over but kept driving thinking there was no way the loss of power steering would wreck the engine!
