Cambelt Overdue, Driving Style?

  172 Cup
Hi My Cambelt needs to be done Urgently, its basically 2years overdue and 14k under @ 58k.

does anyone know how best to drive the car eg Low Revs, no abuse, to preserve the Cambelt until i get it done in just over a week? i really dont want it to go, or should i just not drive it?

It made a scratching sort of grinding noise the other day at 4k Revs 2nd gear, my Ar$ehole went. could this be to do with the tensioners or Pulleys?

Best way to drive the car is stationary on the driveway with the ignition off until you get it done. Not worth the risk, and if you've got it booked in a weeks time it's hardly a big put out for a few days finding other means of transport.

Hopefully it should be ok.
Dont ram it through the gears, just be gentle if you are concerned.

TBH @58k it will still look like new anyway, so dont worry too much.
I have changed them at that mileage and wished I hadnt bothered when I have seen the condition of the belt
Grinding noise is probably something else, or it would have stopped running.

The lower the reves the cheeper it will be to fix when it snaps but every1's right don't drive it unless its to get it fised.

What are you lot worrying about, It's only 2 years over due after all.
I'd have it bouncing off the rev limiter all day long, it will be fine.:approve:

Alternatively, you could go out and buy a £1000 mountain bike for the week. Still be a lot cheaper than some serious top end work.

well i think the car will be rested up now, you guys do know how to put the sh!tters on people.

Take the top mount off and have a look at it. But to be fair its too hard to say. I wouldnt drive it, only to the garage to get it done.

i might have a look at it over the weekend, aint doing much, think i might just rest it up an try get my Appt sooner.

well to be fair, youve gone 2 years already without realising. Whats a few more days going to hurt? Personally i was in the same situation, mine was due a year ago, and i just drove conservativley and was absolutley fine.

Bare in mind others have had worse luck, so it depends on how badly you need to use your car.

i only bought the car a couple of weeks ago, theres no history of the Belts being changed in the history which tbh is pretty good, so as a pecaution ill be getting them done.

i know the whole cam belt issue i believe is down to pure luck, if it goes it goes theres no telling when. i only really use the car for the 10mile round trip to the GF's house.

Ok this thread has me worried.

Just taken ownership of a 2004 53plate 172 with full Renault service history currently on about 45,000 miles.

In the service history that I've got there's no mention of an auxillary belt change to date. I've spoke with the person I got it from and they insist that the service schedule says 50k+ for aux and 75k for the cam belt.

Bit confused now after reading some things on here.

The cambelt gets done 5 years old or 72,000 miles. Which ever is closest. The aux belt I thought was every 3 years of 37,000 miles. I could be wrong about the aux though...

Aux belt definately needs to be done at 36K not sure on the time intervals but it's definately well over on milage. If it fails it could take out the cambelt, it's been known to happen in the past!

mine had a 36k service done by renault, and there is no mention of the aux belt being done? it'll be done with the cam belt, would of though Renault would of done this. oh well

I wouldn't use the car. The mileage doesn't matter, the rubber wears due to exposure to air/moisture, so if you left a brand new car untouched for seven years it could still snap the first time you started it. Why take the risk?
