Cambelt timing tools

  Clio 182
I’m going to be doing my belt, pump etc soon and I’ve read quite a lot and watched some videos and seen a mix between people saying only use genuine tools and some saying it’s fine to use the knock off ones and wanted see what you guys thought, genuine are so expensive for something I’m going to use probably once and I don’t know anyone who has one and the knock are so much cheaper for what looks like does the same job, thoughts ?

Try and get genuine if you can. I managed to pick a complete used set up for not that much.

Just out of interest what’s the reason for it obviously I know the genuine is 100% right but does anyone know if the laser ones are actually not right I don’t understand what the difference is?

Cheers lads

I find this quite important when I get my belts done
Can appreciate this, it’s just I wanted to know if it’s the same with the laser tools or it’s just people being funny with it because it’s not a genuine tool, snap on make 100% right spanner’s but so do Halfords advanced for a quarter of the cost. That was my point and question

Aren't the laser tools known for not being fully accurate or bending? People end up with the timing out, which kind of defeats their point.

I have a Genuine and none Genuine pulley locking tool, they're identical apart from the pulleys move when undoing the bolts on the copy.

My understanding is these engines are quite sensitive to timing, I personally wouldn't risk it as it will be wrong for years after the fact. Not seen any 'good' reviews over the years on being on the forum but happy to be told otherwise

I appreciate everyone’s reply’s and input didn’t want come across and being a t**t to anyone just wanted to genuinely hear some good advice and reasons I’ve spoke to a lot of people today and I’ve heard biggest problem is people use the cheap ones incorrectly they use them to torque the pulleys back on but if you have the front pulley locking tool on properly like you’re supposed to it takes pressure of the MOT 1496

Only other option is to keep an eye out for any 2nd hand genuine one cheaper but I can’t find a genuine set for less than £280
