Cambelt...

Hi guys and girls,

Is there any way to tell roughly how old a cambelt is because I can't find out whether mine has been done or not? My car is a 2003 with 44,000 miles and I bought it last October.

Also, where is the cheapest place to buy one myself, as I know an independent mechanic who can fit it. How many hours labour is it normally and what is the usual split between parts and labour?

I was unsure when mine was done when i bought it last year (2000 reg had done 54k miles) so i just had it changed there was a high chance that it had been done but better safe than sorry. wont cost as much as getting it repaired after the belt snapped....ktec charge £340+vat

think the book time is around 5 hours for it mate. But make sure the guy has the correct locking tool for the job. Although it's going to cost you, I would get it changed for piece of mind really. I probably wouldn't have been done by the previous owner unless they know quite a bit about the car. Most people are inclinded to go off the mileage rather than age.

250ish would be a dream haha - Prices range from 400's to nearly a grand depending on where you live (Renault dealers)

Back street garages are dodgy. Too many miss timed Clio's kicking about due to lack of knowledge and incorrect special tools for the job.

Best bet it to shop about at Renault dealers and Renault specialists

If the guy you know thats going to do the job has the proper locking tools etc and knows 100% how to do the job then go with him but if you are a tad un-sure after me asking this then have a look in the trade section on here and see where your closest specialist is as they will defo look after your car and this is one job you don't want to skimp on mate.

Some garage near me reckons he can do a cam-belt change for £100 if you bring the bits. Apparently he does 182s quite a lot.
