Can you get a half decent Valver for £500-£1k?

  Octavia VRS
Depending on circumstances, maybe looking for a cheap runabout soon, in your experience can you get a half decent Valver in that price range?

Obviously I know it won't be immacualte, would it be possible you think to get a good daily runner tho?

Personally I wouldn't bother with an RSI. You'll only wish you'd got a 16v. Extra power, they look a million times better and less electrics to go wrong. If I was looking for another 10 - 15 year old french car I'd want as few electronics as possible, you know you're going to spend every weekend fiddling with wires otherwise ;)

And the 16v engine sounds very nice too. A lot of people will want to push theirs down to 995 and similar so I'd see if you can push to about 1200 and take your time finding a nice one. Mine might be up for sale in a couple of weeks but my neighbour looks like he wants it - he's had his eyes on it since we moved in lol.

if u want a cheep run around i wudnt bother goin 4 a valver m8 cuz if any work needs doin ( and it usual dus seein as its a 10-15yr old car! ) labour costs can be stupid as theres not much room 2 work in the bay on a 1.8/2ltr!

if u do decide 2 go for 1 though id luk at spendin 1500 on 1....should get quite a decent car 4 that much.....you can pick valvers up cheep but u will end up spendin a bomb repairin and fixin it! if uv only got up to 1k 2 spend then u shud still be able 2 find a decent valver but i wudnt spend any less than 1k imo :)

cheers for the advice so far guys. It will be a wee runaround for me, girlfirend will be getting my mk 2 1.4. Want a quick little hatch and wouldn't mind doing some work on it but nothing major and expensive! Wouldn't be taking it to my work so it would only be getting driven on some evenings and weekends

valvers are getting old now mate so one for that sort of money wont be that great. rsi are good cars and nearly as quick as valvers so i would also look at them as well mate! also they are a lot less fragile as well.

As much as I reccommend the valvers, for a run about in that price range, Id go for an RSI fella.

I'll second what White16valver said!

Tom I think you could be right mate unless I am unbelievably lucky from now until June!

Yeah, you may get lucky and see a nice one that's going cheap..

I had a look at some rsi's on autotrader a few days ago just out of interest and there were some cheap ones with FSH and good cond!

Just because you are more likely to find a nice condition rsi in that price range than you are a valver mate - from what I've seen anyway

If you were looking to spend 2k ish then a nice condition valver is possible!

I would love Tom's Ali but just need a cheapish runabout for the next 12 months. Mrs might have to do teaching in Aberdeen next year and she will need the POW mobile :(

hey I'm not selling! ;) lol

Steve has first dibs on mine lol, was part of the deal...

It's my daily driver though so it's not as mint as it first was when I bought it.... few little touches after uni and it will be back to normal standards.

Going for an RSI is the logical choice if you havent really got much money to spend, much easier to fix/service an RSI than a valver.. i.e to change the oil filter on a valver you have to take the frickin rad out, if you put in the time and effort though, it might just pay off to have a valver..

IMHO

yeah but an Rsi just isn't a velver !!!

I'd go for the valver tbh, for the money it will prob have done high miles, but thats ok providing it been looked after !
Also as usual check for loads of bills etc.

Some of the bagain valvers turning up on here look really nice.

you dont need to take the rad out to change the oil filter.

Hi, i bought my valver a year ago for 700bullets, came with some service history and was owned by an RAC technician so had been looked after. I'm a student and needed a budget car but something i could play with too, i wouldn't change my decision to buy one for anything. Even ma girl knows i love it more than her...:D
