Can you measure your inlets?

  53 Clio's & counting
this might be a silly question, but can you measure your inlets to find out if you have a 'good un' or not?
i am thinking of matched inlets, but with being a house owner now im proper strapped for cash, so spending £120+ on something that might make a tiny difference i really cant afford.
if i removed my upper part and measured the ports on this and the lower one to see how they match + sizes is this viable or is there alot more to matching than simply the bore size?
Maybe some of the tuners on here who do these could give me more of an insight into this?

Ta :)

basically the rs inlet is the best but still alot of room for improvement, the rs has rs writted in big letters on the lower part of the inlet.

there is alot of info on here, there are visable differences in the sizes once they are matched.

Thats the quality of the match on a 197 Cup Race Car inlet manifold.

Blue up one side of the manifold and refit to check overlap. Or use calipers to measure the horizontal, verticle and diagnols of the ports.

i am wondering if there is always such a big difference in size before and after, because if there was sutrely everyone would see a improvement?

for example if mine were fairly well matched then my 120+ quid could be spent on something more worth it?

you can check the sizes by removing the upper and lower inlets and comparing them against the gasket sizes, this would give an indication on them as standard, however i believe you will notice the difference of a modified inlet compared to a standard inlet.

On the 172 its not just a case of matching the port sizes, there are gains to be had by reworking the tight radius bends in the upper manifold section as well.

None of the Phase 1's have good inlets from what ive seen. My inlets were quite a bit smaller than the matched ones though I didn't take any meassurements at the time. Was definately one of the best engine mods ive done so far along with the RS Tuner remap. Though I did find that the inlet size was that much bigger that the even the generic rstuner map wasn't providing enough fuel at full throttle so I had to plump for a custom rstuner remap which made just as much a difference as the inlets did.

As said above though a quick check of how much bigger the matched ones are is too remove the top of the inlet and size up the inlet holes with the gasket.

Only ever heard of one person having this done and it was a one off by Ben R. Not sure of the users name. :)

Think the plenum had to be cut open and totally re-worked.

^^ i remember that, didn't ben say it was the only one he would ever do?

on the other hand, russ. i think on the angelworks website he also quotes the before and after internal measurements? you can measure the inside of the inlets with a vernier caliper.

^^ I emailed Ben a while ago about this one; he will do it ofcourse when you want but it will cost around 500.

And when looking at the Angelworks site, you see the pics of the reworked inlets.. Does'nt look like the ones he is selling ; i think this is the "cut-open" one in the pic.
