Can't get it all the way up (Coolant temp)

  182FF
Since the weather has turned colder my 182 doesn't seem to like being at the correct temperature. The needle is usually a little low only rising to horizontal briefly following some "beans". I've used OBD to check what the car thinks the temp is and it is around 78 whereas I seem to remember it being in the 80's in the past.

Is this normal behaviour now that it is 1-Winter and 2-I have the heater on (because of 1)?

The needle is about 17 minutes to the hour, rather than the normal 15.

Looks like:

Thermostat maybe?

Thermostat is very likely, yes. Mine did exactly that befoore I replaced it last year. But take caution with parts-factor items and get a genuine renault part if you can (I had to take ecp one back as it was too small).

Once new one fitted it warmed up much quicker and the needle stays fixed a fraction above the middle mark on the guage, doesn't make any difference what external temp is or heater setting is, even in minus temps it stays at the "right" temp once warm.

Use a genuine Renault one and make sure it comes with a seal. They can be had for around £18 if I remember correctly and will most likely sort out your problem. Factor in a coolant change as well!

Thanks for the speedy reply guys, you've reinforced my suspicions. I'd rather my engine was running optimally so the 30 odd quid for coolant and stat seems like money well spent - especially if it warms up quicker and I can prevent frost bite from kicking in!

Will give local stealers a call and check stocks. Will report back if this fixed it.

could you update this when you get it sorted mate?

got a 172 doing the same and a ph1 with an emmissions failure that im suspecting is coolant temp related so this would be a handy read before i buy a box of parts

Im genuinely surprised someone hasnt been on and added to the picture considering the thread title !!!

Hehehe can't get it all the way up and problems with emissions?

Mine passed an MOT like this so I suspect you might have other issues and/or it is staying on the cold map.

Actually looking at the figures I'm going to go with bigger issues! Lambda sensor?

  phase 1 172
they both going onto second map but by those reading i think they reading a lil colder than they are throughing the fuel/air ratio out of sync causing it to over fuel and probably knackered the cat

If you've got an Android phone buy a obd bluetooth adapter called eml327 I think and download an app called torque pro. Allows you to watch the Lambda voltages and coolant temp etc

I will do my thermostat this week and update.

yeah i have a android phone-iv got a obd reader that does live data on the clio i used it to read the AIT but not sure what other sensors it reads of the top of my head

what should it be sat at during cold weathers?

Under ELM BT modules

IAT = Inlet Air Temp
CWT = Coolant Temp (°c)

78°c is too low. The thermostat should regulate at around 88-90°c if healthy and when really hot it may see 100°c. Pull your stat out and I bet the rubber seal isn't sat right... new stat time.

Yeah, really easy. If you are quick you won't lose much coolant either.

Regards the lambda for the guy in Durham, i'm sure i've got a fairly new one knocking about in the garage you can have for not much. Send me a pm.

UPDATE:

New thermostat and some coolant - £32.56 from Renault.

Easy enough change, airbox out, three bolts from around housing, let the 1.5 litres of coolant head flood out, swap over thermostats, bolt back up, top up coolant, bleed, run engine and heater until up to temp and keep an eye on level.

Now it's running back at the temperature is should, 85-89 ish. The old thermostat rubber had broken away and is now wedged somewhere in the radiator I imagine.
