Cant open bonnet

HELP!

need to open bonnet on my cavalier!

i had to change the battery in the dark the other day and i think i may of left some tools on the slam pannel!

one the passenger side sits hald an inch higher!

the release ever works but isnt dissengaging the latch!

suggestions????
