Car Failed MOT 182 cup!! sad face

Car was looking like new today! took it to a local garage! and they failed it!

i was informed that it needs a new nearside from lower suspension arm/cw ball join as it has excessive wear - car has only 22k on the clock last mot was carried out at 19k and there was no mention of this?!! Apparently it caused by pot holes etc! ive read various reports on here etc and i am informed that the ball joint has to come part of the suspension arm as reno dont sell the separately - cost 160 which is with a alignment - thats bad enough..but its also failed on emissions

second fast idle test should be 0.300% its at 7.12 which is apparently really high!! they inform me that it will probaly be a new lamba sensor even though it had one of these under warrantly about a year ago!?! is there two??!!

What do you think folks! if its a new lamba sensor - i see this costing around the 350.00 mark ! as they advise me to have a emissions test at 50.00

if it was me, i would go somewhere else.

Best places i have always noticed is the best ones are tyre centres.. they get no extra cash for saying it needs a new ball joint cause they can't repair it cause there not a garage.. so there not gonna make stuff up.. If you know what i mean

Yeh there are 2 lambdas, one before the cat and one just after.

ats passed my winter hack last year 1996 P Escort, i cant drive it anywhere without the suspension knocking and clunking, and the back box was rotten through, he said the blowing back box was only an advisory :cheers:

Not good paul

There are 2 Lambda's, 1 pre cat and 1 post cat. If you havent noticed a big drop in fuel economy then it makes the pre cat lambda a less likely cause, and the post cat is purely to turn the dash light on.

Where abouts in Notts are you.
There is an Alans Test Centre in Derby and in Mansfield.
They only do mot tests and don't do repair work so have no incentive to fail the car.
I always go there and find them to be v. good.

Could be worth a visit.

Its probably because it doesnt get used much!!

The cat starts to degrade when left and not used much. Nice to give it a good bit of beans.

But also yes sounds like a lambda has gone.


There about £120 or so. Get it done and use the car more! lol

Remember to ask for owners club discount Paul if you buy from them. GSF are cheaper than CES when you take away the 10% discount.

My phase 1 would of failed on emissions if the tester hadnt held it at 4000rpm for 10 mins connected to the gas tester.


It was on 8.2% to start with. stayed around 7% for ages then dropped like a stone to 0.1%

Took ages to get the cat hot. It had been stood for 2 months

Might be worth getting someone with a clip/rs tuner to see if the lambda sesnor is working/switching first. if it is then its probably just a cold cat.

Bargain price for lambda!

I wudnt want to guess at whihc one is gone tho.
I normally use my dads workshop and get readings from each sensor.

Only way to tell really.

Mine had a faulty pre-cat lambda when i picked up my 182, warrenty sorted it but i took readings myself. Was completely dead lol...

pre cat lambda is the only one that effects the engine. post cat is just for the warning light to tell you if the cat isn't working

You can get ball joints seperately, just not from renault.

Don't pay renault to have it done they charge the earth, as said above you can buy the ball joint seperately just not from renault.

its as a local Nationwide center! not renault! they have rang various place and tbh id rather have genuine parts
