car for 2-3K

  Lupo Gti

looking for a faster car than my 1.4 rt, around £2000 to £3000 pounds, the criteria is that it needs to be fairly quick, around golf gti 8v speed, BUT it needs to be reliable, i was thinking along the honda civic way, but having been to trax this year and driven a friends escort Gti around the circuit i would like something that would handle really well!!!

any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated

You can get a Mazda Eunos with about 60-70k on the clock for just over £2k and a UK MX-5 with higher mileage for about £3k. Theyre reliable, and a hoot to drive. Blokes may think youre gay, but women will love you and youll get both arms tanned in the summer. Also plenty of tuning parts available if youre that way inclined..

  silver valver/hybrid

i have driven a civic vti-s, pretty quick would give a standard valver a run for their money, the one i drove had 95k on the clock and was still in very good condition. but the handling is a bit pants!

Bravo HGT

Punto GT/HGT - will make your arse bleed, 130BHP at just over 1000kgs, easy to mod too!

Pug 106 GTi

Alfa 145/146 1.8 TS

Alfa 155 1.8 TS

there are many, many others, just scour the review board at parkers.co.uk and youll find lots of hidden gems, oh yeah just thought of some more

Proton Satria GTi - good handling, needs more than 130bhp

Daihatsu Sirion 1.3 rally2 (or something) 8.1secs 0-60. may be slightly out of your price range, but being a daihatsu prices will plunge.
or a rally4, slightly slower 8.9secs but 4wd has to be good grip

The Daihatsu look good in my opinion ( I like being different).

The Rally 2 is 2 wheel drive the rally 4 is a 44 wheel drive version

110 or so HP out of a 1.3

I saw a rally on Sky a while back they looked like they fitted in even standard and the 4 wheel drive version is only £10k new similar to a disesl clio and it will go way faster

valver, definately.

0-60 in mid 7s for a good one

top end fairly good

reliability depends on the previous owner, will see of a golf gti 8v (i take it ur mate has one of these)

paid 2100 for my K reg, just shy of 2100 worth of reciepts, spare set of ph1 alloys, ph2 grille still in original packaging, haynes manual, spare fuel filter, mint condition, still scares me, i love it.

well chuffed i didnt get an ibiza gti

if u really dont want a valver, i reckon something jap for reliability, maybe a honda, it just depends on the insurance though.

my next car will be either a mitsi FTO, or a willy1, but could be persuaded by a tegi type r
