Car not starting (not responding to Key Fob)

  Grande 1.2
Hi guys, my car won't start; it turns over but won't start (I am seeing a flashing red light on the dash). My car is a Clio MK2 PH1 2001.

I have worked out that the car will start by holding the key button down as I turn the key in the ignition.. however this is only a temp fix, and most of the time doesn't work straight away.

Can anybody please offer any advice? It might sound stupid.. but will changing the keys battery make a difference?

Cheers,
Mat.

How do I go about that mate, is it something I can do myself? sorry, i'm not the best with car stuff!
  • 1 Enter your vehicle with your remote and ignition key and close all of the doors behind you.
  • 2 Turn the car to the "On" position, press the "Lock" button on your fob and turn the key back to the "Off" position.
  • 3 Repeat Step 2 three more times, for a total of four cycles, and end with the key in the "On" position during the fourth cycle.
  • 4 Wait for the locks to sound. You have now entered programming mode. Press the "Lock" button on your remote again within five seconds. The locks will cycle again to indicate successful programming.
  • 5 Press "Lock" again on any additional remotes within 10 seconds of entering programming mode to program these remotes as well. The locks will cycle after each successfully programmed remote. You can program up to three remotes.
  • 6 Turn the ignition back to the "Off" position to end the programming sequence.

TBH i dont think it has anything to do with resyncing the key, whats more likely is the transponder inside the key has come away from circuit board from the key being dropped ect.

When you put the key in the igniton and push the button on the key it pushes the transponder back onto the contacts on the circuit board. I'll see if i can get a pic of the transponder.

Im almost 100% certain the key is at fault but a few things to try;

1. Spare key (If you have one)
2. Fuse No 21 (5amp fuse check it hasnt blown of deteriated)

Thanks everyone! really appreciate the help! I'll try all these steps and see how it goes! I have dropped my keys lately... If the key is damaged how would I go about getting it fixed/replacement? I don't have spare.

I just opened the key to replace its battery before re-synching with the car... the 'charging coil' is loose (which is most likely the problem) - I cant see any other obvious damage... i can't see anything wrong with the transponder either (although there could be some damage I just can't see)...

I suppose i'm going to need a new car key, would anybody please be able to recommend where to buy one? is this something I could order over the internet etc.

Another weird thing... I put the key back together and it still unlocks/relocks the car.. even with the charging coil damaged.. :confused:

Hi

Is the bit that's circled on the picture Ive attached loose?

If so then that's the transponder that disarms the immobilizer,

Without a spare key to try the only options are to either go to Renault and pay in excess of 100 quid for a new key or you can replace the whole system which involves changing;

  • ECU
  • UCH
  • Key
  • Ignition Barrell
  • Door Locks

Thanks mate, yes that is the bit thats broken.. I've been looking up a few key replacement services - all ranging above 100 quid. Looks like i'll be forking out! :disappointed:Thanks for the help! :smile:

  Many.
Or go to a specialist, should be cheaper. Or a autolocksmith.

Ebay keys are £20 and good quality, then programming, you can swap the keyblade obviously.

I've sent out some emails today for specialists and autolocksmiths. Also rung a specialist who is going to get back to me with a quote.

when you say 'Ebay keys for 20 quid' does mean I could buy one, and programme it myself using the method Scott mentioned above? Or would I still need to go to a specialist to have the new key programmed?

Where are you based? I used to send keys to a guy who would read the code from the chip in the picture scott has put up and code a new transponder which u would push into the key casing much like the earlier immobiser systems, Which was half the price of the main dealers so around £90

This Immobiliser problem is a B*****d to sort out. For me anyway! Ive tried all sorts to try stop mine doing the fast flashing red light problem. Yet sometimes i can get in the car and its fine, other times it will just constantly flash and refuse to start!! 😢
