Car not starting. Ph1 172

Hey guys,

My car won't start, I'll turn the key and the engine will turn over, but isn't starting. It will almost start on the first attempt and then die and won't restart, will just turn over and over. Up until 2 days ago it would start first time ,all the time.

I managed after about 15 minutes of trying to get it to start, but once it was turned off again, I faced the same problem. Battery and plugs all checked. Taken the TDC sensor off and gived the contact a clean, although i understand if it is the TDC sensor i will need a new one.

Any suggestions?

is the immobiliser light flashing or staying on?

try charging the battery overnight. it may be low voltage.

The immobiliser light is flashing when the car is trying to start.

Try the fuel cut off switch! Big red button @ the battery!

if the lights flashing its an imobiliser fault. Keys are very weak on ph1s. Have you got a spare key?

you sure about that, i always thought if it was just on then it was at fault.

mine always flashes and always starts(touch wood)

Tried both my keys and it's making no difference. The car still isn't starting. It will half start sometimes. I will put my foot on the accelerator when starting and it will start to fire, the revs will increase and then less than a second later it will die again. Tried the fuel cut off switch, but to no avail.

Any more ideas?

Does the crank sensor/TDC sensor sound like a plausible fault? i don't know how exactly the sensor effects the car, but if it was faulty would that explain why sometimes it has been starting first time and then other times not at all?

Sorry mate, can't help more than everyone else has. It would be worth changing the TDC, if its not that it will be the immobilisor!

I'm going to try and get it to Renault tomorrow, i think, just need to work out how to get it there...

Are you honestly telling me you havent found a reliable garage in your area during the time of owning your 172? If not id trailer it to one of the specialists on here!

I'm guessing its you UCH ring. Immobilisor just cuts the fuel pump basically so it will still turn over. If the lights flashing when turning over the Immobilisor is still active

Ok, i'll try not to take it to Renault I've yet to find a reliable garage that's for sure and if i had a trailer it would be on the back of one

Cheers Danny, i'll give somewhere a call this morning. Wish i had got this sorted earlier in the week. New Years means i probably won't get this sorted until Monday :dapprove:

What? It was his idea to take it to a garage (Renault) tomorrow i was merely saying dont blindly take your car to Renault as they will charge you an arm and a leg just finding the issue let alone fixing it, he would be better going to a reliable indipendant garage or specialist if thats the route he wants to take!

i had something like this happen early in the year and it turned out to be the key fob mate.

I've tried both my keys. One is pretty much brand new and only been used twice since i got it 3 months ago. :dapprove:
