Car Supermarket 172s

Hi - Im new to the forums... Im just looking into getting a new 172. I test drove one at a Renault dealer this weekend. The best price they said they could do was £14,000 - I didnt really haggle any for that though.

Motorpoint - the car supermarket in Derby - sells them for £11999 with delivery miles. According to the sales people they are identical to UK models and come with the balance of the maufacturers warranty.

Just wondering if anybody has had a 172 from one of these supermarkets, if so hows it been.... Im just wondering if theres any pit falls in saving so much money....

Cheers

Mine is an import.. you get the full 3 year warranty if your clio comes from within europe.

The only difference is there is no alarm fitted as standard to the imports.. but thats a bonus if you ask me cause you can go out and get your own better alarm installed and still save 5 grand.

I bought mine from Motorpoint Derby, it came with everything but an alarm, but had a better one fitted. You get three years Renault Warranty, but need to spend £5 and get an English handbook.

I had the car for 1 year other than a few problems (not related to the import, just normal Renault problems) I would never buy a 172 from a dealer again. Imports are just as good, but a lot cheaper.:D

Cheers guys - what alarm would you go for.... Ive never needed to get one before. I assume they still have the immobiliser?

Also is the warranty as this?:

"All new Renault Clios (purchased in the UK) have a 3 year or 60,000 mile warranty, Renault Accident Services cover, a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty, 3-year paint warranty and 3-year Renault Roadside Assistance."

No I got mine from tradesales slough you only get the 3 year warranty not the rest because you not buying it from a main ren dealer, but the rest not worth much anyhow if you want breakdown join aa or rac etc £40 to £60 not that your need it, its a renault:D

its a minor point really but watch out for motorpoint as they will add about £800 in fees onto that price. One incredibly enough is for a pre delivery inspection (obviously important on a brand new car lol) Opt out of all the extras tho and their true on the road price is about 12.5k which is about right. I paid this at the car people in wakefield.

I looked at motorpoint too (Derby) and their cars were sourced from Cyprus. This means you get one years manufacturers warranty, and have to pay for a further two years dealer warranty. The best place I found was www.new-car-discount.com">www.new-car-discount.com who only supply UK cars, which have the full 3yr warranty, 3yr AA cover, and the alarm for £12500 OTR. Ive ordered a 172 from them, but ive got to wait until October

I brought mine from the main dealer, once I worked out the extra cost of fitting an alarm, RAC, etc to make it "full spec" I went back to my local renault dealer and told them to match it or Ill go somewhere else, it was surprisingly easy to haggle him down to the same price.

He did make me laugh by claiming that the import ones arent as reliable and come back for repairs more often than the officially imported ones!?! Amazing what some sales people try!

lagerlout1 - When did you order, i.e. how long will you have had to wait? Also can you pick colour? They dont seem to have an address on there website which seems a little dodgey?

Ive got my 172 up for asale at the moment. Its amazinghwo people react when they ask if its an inport and I reply "yes". Some guy called me tonight about the car and ask if it was an import, I replyed yes, he replyed, Im not interested ! I informed him that it was same spec apart for the alarm and that it was built in the same factory........ I know he replys, I work for Renault !!!!! So whats the problem ? Its priced cheaper too ! Huh !

I think I may just get a second hand UK spec car as they doo seem to keep their value a little better - I guess thats because theyre a little cheaper in the first place. Weird though as apart from the alarm theyre identical...

/sjd172 - Where is your car forsale?

Occasionally some insurance companies might ask if the imported car is a full UK spec.

Sorry about the late reply been to the pub (hic).

I hope its not dodgey!! You can choose your colour and options ( six disc changer, sat nav) when you order. You pay a £500 deposit, and they send you confirmation of your order with an invoice and reciept for the credit card payment. On the invoice is a postal address. i was a bit unsure myself, but I rang them up and the bloke on the end of the phone was very helpful and sounded genuine.

I ordered mine on the 10th of august and have got to wait until October. They said that the September cars had all been allocated. i also seem to remember someone else on here having bought their car from new-car-discount. Hope this helps!!

Hiya, im a newbie too looking to buy a Cup soon.

So whats the crack with these supermarket places, they import the cars from somewhere in the EU or something??

I take it warranty issues with renault are ok, they dont try and fob you off coz you have an import??

Just been on http://www.dccook.co.ukhttp://www.dccook.co.uk they have 172 Cups for just under £11k and 172s for just a tad over £12k, saving £2k-£2.5k!!!!!

Tempting, very tempting

My car was bought from Motorpoint and originated in Holland, I paid 12k there was no £800 handling charge or whatever. I paid for a few little extras. Insurance is the same and when I sold it I made just as much as if it had been a UK sourced car. So I personally didnt see a down side to buying an import.

greeper - sounds to me like motorpoint is fine then if you got the three year standard renault warranty and sisnt have to pay any extra for it....

There seems to be quite a bit of confusion as to what you actually get / dont get when buying imports from various sources....

Yep - and I know a few other people who bought their 172s from Motorpoint without problems and got everything they wanted, though you should just check that the 172 they now receive are from the EU (not Belgium as they have less bhp), just to be safe.

Good luck getting a 172.

Oh yeh their cars will be pre-registered so you will be the second owner but I did not find this a problem when selling it on.

CupMat

The clio cup climate on this site does not specify that it has climate in the itinary. I would be very careful with these people.

JetsetJinbo - I had a Sigma M32 Cat1 alarm fitted, if you do a search on this forum on alarms you will find lots of information on the best ones.

I bought mine from Well Lane Turbo centre at Batley Yorkshire. They tend to specialise in Subarus but do import some Clios at similar prices to Motorpoint etc. You are also much more likely to get a fair trade in deal if you need to. I was very pleased with them, they also paid for an alarm and handbook. The car I got was sourced in Europe so I was able to get the 3 yr warranty but you do have to apply for it yourself to Renault UK.
