Car too expensive to run

With the petrol prices going up and up I cant help but feel im gonna be priced out of the fast car market!

I used to think it would be easier when I hit 25 but its not the insurance thats killing me its the fuel cost!

If it aint one thing its a bleedin nother!

This reminds me of the old arguments where people said they couldnt afford Optimax over normal unleaded.

If you look at the price increase over the last 12 months and work out how much extra it is costing you per week for your fuel it really is no big deal.

Work out what a 10p per litre increase in petrol will cost if you do 30mpg and given that the typical person will only do around 200 miles a week

I make it £3 a week well thats sure to break the bank. My mates blow £50 on a night in town without even thinking about it. They leave £3 worth of beer in the bottom of their pint glasses each week by not finishing it all off before leaving.

there is two points here really cause it is annoying when anything goes up in price especially when we pay more than most countries already but people are all better off nowadays cause everyone earns more money now

but thats only due to low levels of inflation. the petrol increase is probably going to start a rise in inflation which will make people worse off overall.

I do at least 300miles a week minimum, if prices get any higher ill change jobs to one where either I dont pay petrol (company car) or its closer to home. At the moment the price of petrol isnt an issue for me.

Btw people are forgetting its the government (tax @ 70%) thats responsible for the UKs expensive fuels and not the companies that sell/refine it.

Yeah and they also forget that compared to some other European countries that have cheaper petrol we have far lower levels of income tax because the tax money comes in from petrol as well.

yeah but People forget that 70 odd % of tax means we have billiard table smooth tarmac the length and breadth of the country, fully lit motorways and all quickly/efficiently maintained roads and motorways rather than stretches speed limited with lanes coned for months on end with no f**ker working on them.

the point abt the fact that the uk actually has cheap petrol prices but just excessive levels of tax is very valid. however, what frustrates me is the fact that shell, BP etc are not regulated and are allowed to make abnormal profits. what these companies have is a monoply and even after writting off reserves and options....anything and everything they possbily could last year to aviod even more media attention they still made a massive gain on the previous year....the argument abt petrol is just so political. the government need to reduce the price of petrol in one way shape or form, or to regulate the price per litre to ensure that they dont fluctuate too much IMO. someone mentioned above that it doesnt actually cost that much more now than last year etc...well for the first time when i fueld up in my fiances car (my old car) yeterday which cost me £28, let me tell u i felt that! generally that wud cost me £23 when i first had that car and petrol prices were 79.9 p per lite a 18mnths ago.

Loony...u are right abt the condition of the rds, however, for the amnt of money they rake in from petrol taxes they shudnt just be mint they shud be fooking lined with rose petals!!! although, just becasue the govern makes alot of money from petrol/fuel duties it doesnt mean it shud recycle those funds into the transport system, maybe tax reliefs, subsidies in other areas wud be a better decsion. however i think that the m6 by birmingham shud be retarmaccced in parts! that is poss the worst stretch of motorway ive been on

ive been more conservative with my driving of late but at the moment the prices are p!ss!n me off, i only use £10-15s worth a week though so it doesnt affect me as much as some people.

leeds, your 182 must be pretty economical? I get 27mpg out of my Lotus around town every week and Im pleased with that – 230 miles for about £30.

If your motor has one of those trip computers in it Id be tempted to leave it on the MPG setting and see how far I could get if it is that bad and limit the blasts a bit. The upside is your car will feel fast again.

Small consolation but my old GTV V6 used to turn in 17MPG on the same journeys.

I was getting 50mpg in 5th gear 65mph today on the motor way.... then I had some fun after that with the lower gears and it did drop.... just a bit though ok, a few bit!

I went to Africa for 2 weeks and just got back, when I went it was about 87p and I get back and everywhere is 92p etc, was a bit of a shock!

The Clios are very economical though so I dont worry about it too much, Ive always used Ultimate or Optimax which was costing me 95p+ per litre anyway. Considering the performance of the RS Clios, 30-40mpg is bloody fantastic, I dont go easy but happily see 35mpg+ on average over 250 miles or so per week, cant really grumble at that considering how much fun Im having driving it.

They say you cant go faster for less, in my experience that stretches to economy as well as the initial outlay.

you cant get much more ecanomincal than a 182! my 172 used to give 29 mpg on a thrash round some country roads. You wanna try having a tubo! you can visibly see the petrol gauge going down when you thrash it, have seen 11 mpg!

Try driving the V6!! 17mpg if driven hard and 23mpg average. My fuel bill has almost doubled since trading in the 172.

In 1.6 land, I know of people getting 450 miles out of a tank.

I get 300 in my 182 (which is actually quite good).

So as far as pence per mile is concerned, smaller engines & diesels are the way forward... (for someone like me doing 2k minimum per month).

BTW: THANK GOD I got rid of the meggy225...

That would be an extra £8 every two days!!

If your doing any sort of milage a diesel makes a load of sence. Driving round me dci gets 55~65mpg (depending hwo gently I am) the Williams gets about 30~36 on the same route. Basically the Williams costs another 5 pence per miles, over 20k that adds up to £1k not an insignificant saving plus road fund and insurance are lss on diesels.

If fuel prices stay this high (and they will for a bit longer) then buying a diesel and having a second pterol car for the fun driving will be cheaper even with the extra costs of running a second car.

best thing to do. remove spare wheel + kit on the 172 saves approx 20kgs and if your brave the back seats as most people dont use them. get into fifth and stay there as much as you can, dont take over 3k rpm, waut until engine has heated up before you go fast as intially it drinks loads of fuel.. and im not talking aobut the engine temp gauge 5 mins after that you know the oil has heated up. turn rear speakers off (eletrics use fuel not battery when moving) dont run the lights on full beam and try not to use the climate as much.

42mpg is easily avaliable but it almost defeats the point of having a performance car,

rest in the knowlage that you can get great economy and performance and the choice is all down to your driving style, dread to think if the car weighed another 200kgs like most hatch backs or had a turbo/supercharger i.e 1.8 T vag or supercharger Mini cooper those cars are in the low twenties in reality !

next clio RS will be heavier and more powerful so the current 172/182 are a perfect blend of lightweight performance and economy.

The new ones got a longer ratio box so will hopefully keep the revs below 4km at 80mph going over 4k is where a lot more fule is burned as the ECU mapping is designed to make power not be economical like sub 4k running is.

Omar brand new dci engines are £1.2k I think all in or used ones for £550 or so from breakers. However youll asko need the box. Ill be interested to see how economical my car is vs the 2.0 liter at speed in Germany last trip I got 55mpg adverage all the way there and home. the Williams got about 33mpg I think. Running at speed ie 80 and my mpg drops but I dont run at that speed abroad on autobahns for long.

The Clio all use the same chassics the only difference the 172/182 has is different damper etc and wider track (in the 182s case) at the fornt and the sunroofs etc.

i use around £40 - £60 a week! and i usually do around 800 - 1k miles a month......used 2 spend about £20 a week in my rover 1.4 .....petrol prices r stupid.....but i reckon if we wernt payin so much tax on petrol wed b payin it on sumthin else and so wed still be moanin....

its gone really piss me off though when this new law cums in about payin so much per mile depending on what road u use!

Buy my fabia vRS, as Im getting a 182 delivered soon, great car 45-55mpg depending on driving style, I used to do high mileage now i do bugger all so opted for the fun car for a while, £9K, bargain. See cars for sale...

Im not really bothered as Tesco rocket fuel is like the same price as bp normal unleaded where i live. Car is running rough on rocket fuel though hopefully its the hot temperatures.

I thought they were oligopolies not monopolies - barometric price leadership or something an idea from another group to stop buying from the one that has the greater market share and it will lower its prices and the others will follow.
